Who is your club's most overrated player by your own fans & the media?

No one rates our players anymore. Ginbey is highly regarded I guess despite only having a couple of decent games in his career so far. He is young and built like a beast so that's probably a harsh assessment.
Campbell Chesser living up to his first round pick would be nice too.

From media - Dom Sheed a year or 2 ago before prolonged injury. Living off 2018 for 3 or 4 years. I know Eagles fans were frustrated though.

Van Rooyen at Melbourne. Hands of stone and brainless on the field. Does unrealistic leaps, and drops most that he should take. Offers very little outside of that.
But half the football commentators are ex full or center-half-forwards so there is a circle jerk amongst them when it comes to bigger forwards, and low IQ supporters get caught up in the hype..

Toby Greene. Way too much media fawning. Look great player who can really influence a game. But makes some dumb moves interfering with oppo players (see the free kick he gave away vs Carlton the other week when Hogan was lining up for goal) not to mention all the suspensions that let his side down. Also makes alot of clangers.
But will still find a way of sinking the Swans in the dying seconds as usual.

to answer seriously though, by our own fans it’d be Will Phillips. Seen as a future gun by most North fans who keep delivering the same excuses he got in 2021 (which were fair then), he needs to make some serious progression in my eyes to be a listed footballer, let alone a star, in 5 years. For me it’s clear as day that his junior weapons are not transferable over to AFL level, in the same way that Jack Watts had his strengths minimised and weaknesses maximised.

From the media it’d be Luke Davies-Uniake. His 7-8 week block at the end of 2022 was fantastic and he was 23 with 80 games to his name so it looked real.
But now he’s 25 in a month and has over 100 games, and his performance has not improved at all. He hasn’t kicked on to be that driving midfielder. He’s a good mid, but I think he is a follower not a leader. He’s not a competitive beast that will be desperate and go that extra sprint instead of a jog when needed - he’s not in the same ballpark as a Maynard, Selwood, May type who desperately wants to be better & win.

I think our next wave of youth is also overrated (Wardlaw, Comben, McKercher etc) but I also get that it’s due to prolonged losing that North fans feel that way and so it’s more hope/faith rating than true belief that they’re all future All-Australians.

Would you trade Phillips for Pendlebury?

Not really spoken about by the media, but the one of ours that seems to get overrated by our fans is Caleb Marchbank.

Sure, he's shown some glimpses of being good, but he's almost spoken about as the second coming of Weitering by some.
He's a good loose interceptor, but with ball in hand, he slows everything down and stifles our play.
I would've delisted him years ago.

Is this a trick question?

There’s not any scenario where we would need too as Pendles is a UFA. So no I wouldn’t trade anything for him - if Collingwood say look you’re a top 3, maybe top 1 player of our club of all time, but we just need to progress our list and keep Fin Macrae and others, then we get him that way.

And if Collingwood say “oh Scott you want to play on, we will find a spot for you then” then both him & Collingwood are finding a deal within a day.

It's hard to say for us, because neither our fans nor the media really rate many of our players at the moment - that's what happens when you're 1-6.

Jordan Dawson is good, but not setting the world on fire, Isaak Rankine is exciting but no one expects him to be perfect, and Taylor Walker had a phenomenal 2023 but I think we're pretty realistic that the end has to come fairly soon.

Some of us rate Darcy Fogarty, but others point out that he's not producing enough for his age - criticism with which I agree. Some really like Rory Laird but he's criticised for low hurt factor - criticism with which I agree.

Absolutely.

For us probably Jayden Short. Good player, but no where near as good of a kick as is regularly suggested, bar long bombs from outside 50. Field kicking is nothing special IMO. Average defensively.

Caleb Daniel, he's been poor basically every game this year and yet the media think the club is in disharmony because he's been dropped

Zac Williams and Jack Martin..

Can I submit that Heeney is no longer overrated?
Ill Allow It GIF

I would have delisted Martin , marchbank, Williams, and if we got a decent small forward like Papley, I would have added Durdin to that list as well

Hurts but Travis Boak.

Always folds in the real clutch moments when we need a goal. Happened countless times in finals…

Hard to argue too much with any of that, but I think it's a little harsh on Durds and a little early to write him off.
Williams at his best is pretty good, but he's been a bit average this year. Martin offers some X-factor and a point of difference, but doesn't play enough. I see Elijah taking his spot.

Marchy had bugger all prep and came straight into the side for his first game earlier in the season, without having to earn his spot.
Stunk it up, nearly injured a few of our own, then got injured again.
Now he's straight back into the side this week, with no form to back it up, at the expense of a hard working, hard bodied bloke who has earned his spot in the VFL.
Most games he's played in a season is 16 (back in 2017!). Has played more than 10 games 3 times in 10 seasons and doesn't look likely to do it this year.
