Who is your standout all-time favourite player?

I haven't been around this site and you have probably posted this before but I'm to busy replying to everything going to search the archives.

Who is that standout, gives you an adrelanine rush, favourite player of all time? Why? Preferably someone you actually saw play live but if not tell us anyway.

I'm caught somewhere between Jezza (circa 1979) and Wayne "The Dominator" Johnston.

Forced to pick one I'd say Johnston. He was a tough uncompromising player and the backbone of Carlton's finals efforts '79, '81, '82.

This is very hard, there are so many players that I loved watching play, but if I had to choose one it would be Simon Madden, I think he is the best ruckman of all time. He wasn't just a tap ruckman like most of the others, he was also good around the ground, used to shepherd well for the other players, could mark & kick goals & was a leader on & off the field.

Micky Conlan!

As a kid growing up, it was always Michael Roach. I would go to the footy expecting to stand on top of a pack and was rarely disappointed.

This is a hallucination and these faces are in a dream. A computer generated environment; a fantasy island you can do anything and not have to face the consequences.

For favourite (as opposed to best) it is toss up between Paul "The Flying Dutchman" Vanderhaar - for being such a freakly skilled player despite never training, smoking and being a piss head AND mighty Max Crow!

Lots of great players I have admired over the years

Stevie Wright
Mark Bayes
Bruce Doull
Alex Jesulenko
Paul Kelly
Kevin Bartlett
Paul van der Haar
Paul Roos
Bernie Quinlan
Warwick Capper
Tony Lockett
Trevor Barker
Wayne Carey and James Hird

have been some of my favourites

Best ever ? Cripes I dunno - its impossible to pick out any one single individual, Jesulenko is a little before my time and I never saw him at his best.

Paul Kelly for me, with a special and affectionate mention to Paul van der Haar - just a spectacular player and some of the best 'screamers' I've ever seen.

cheers

I'll go for two, one North, one opposition. From North, I have many other players that I have liked more...Blight, Larkin, Schimmelbush, the Krakouers, Martyn, Greig, Dench...but for his sheer ability to generate excitement amongst North fans, it has to be Wayne Carey. I don't think I need to explain.

From the opposition, there are too many players to list, but the one that stands out is Gary Ablett. Watching Geelong has not been the same since Ablett retired. When ever the ball went anywhere near Ablett, there would be a sense of expectation on what he could do...not only from Geelong fans, but from opposition fans too. After Ablett, Geelong got Brett Spinks. I think that out of sheer habit, the Geelong fans would stand up to see what would happen whenever the ball went near Spinks. Since then, they've not only ditched Spinks, but that feeling of expectation.

Peter Motley

Would have been better than Bradley and Kerna's if he had the chance. Could do anything except kick a long left foot.

I would probably have to agree with you about "The Dominator". Although if just talking about Carlton players, it is hard to pick between Jonhston, Bosustow or Doull.
BTW. Thank God another Carlton supporter is in here. I've been fending off the crap by myself. Stick around.

The Blues. The Best in the business.

Neither play for Essendon (one did), but I'd have to say my all time favourite player/s, as in the one's that give me the most satisfaction to watch, are Darren Jarman and Gavin Wanganeen.

Jarman is a freak. Never have I seen such deft foot/hand skills from a player. Nor have I seen many with the efficient decision making capabilities as he. One player who can make even the most seasoned look stupid and demonstrates sheer grace in doing so. Undoubtedly won Adelaide two flags with his solo efforts in both GF'S (apologies to Mcloed) and is by far the most adept and exhilarating footballer I've had the fortune of seeing in my 23 years of life.

Not the best and not far from it, but the most entertaining.

Wanganeen would be a close second. Not to the level of foot/hand skill of Jarman, but the balance, composure and concentration is unmatched. Time and time again, his rebounding and creativity from down back has resulted in goals for Essendon and to a lesser extent, Port. Just has so much flair and exuberance when in full flight and courage is exemplary. Rued the day he left Essendon and unlike many other Essendon supporters, find it impossible to resent the guy.

Without a doubt it would have to be Peter Matera. He was a champion in the early to mid 90's. His dashing runs and long goals were brilliant.

Sandie Simon Madden was not the greatest ruckman of all time, that honour goes to Polly Farmer. I never saw him play, but everyone tells me he was the greatest.

i luv westcoast
Get a grip, this thread is for your standard out player of all time,it is my opinion, it is not meant to be who is right or wrong. In my opinion Madden was the best, because he wasn't just a tap ruckman. You can think whatever you want, that is your opinion, but don't start telling people they are wrong because their opinions are different to yours.

My SERIOUS favourite players at the moment, putting aside club loyalty, would be :

D. Jarman
Paul Kelly
J. Hird

I lOVE the way Paul Kelly plays football.

Of all time, my favourite player to watch, would probably be Ablett, or Gary Lyon. Magnificent skills. Tragedy about Lyon.

Peter Daicos : The best goalsneak ever to play the game, while Shaw & Brown provided the courage and Millane & Kelly had the toughness it was the magician who converted all that hardwork and put it on the scoreboard in 1990. Kicking an amazing 92 goals a great effort from a non-key position forward.

Darren Millane : Pants was tough and a phenomenol talent who provided plenty of run from the wing. Who could forget in '90 when he played the final series with a broken thumb. We miss you Dasher but you will never be forgotten.

Nathan Buckley : A modern day champ who has won five Copeland trophies and numerous other honours.

Honourable mentions : Crossisca, Brown, Williams, Mcguane, Kelly and Banks.

From North it has to be Keith Grieg. Dual Bronlow medalist and one of the players of the century. A true legend.

From the opposition, Bruce Doull. A classy backmen. In fact, I became such a fan of his, that I almost switched allegiances to Carlton (please forgive me but I was only 7 or 8 at the time).

Worst player from North is a toss up between Blight and Carey. I hate both, but I'd hate it (and them) even more if they played for another team.

For the Bombers, my fav's are:

Michael Long - Love watching this guy play, he's capable of the most amazing things with a footy. Can cut a backline to shreds with his deft touches.

Hird - Pound for pound he's the best I've seen, has got it all except height and brute strength. CLASS all CLASS.

Roger Merrett - This guy was my hero as a teenager, played the game like I wished I could, skilled, strong and tough as nails.

Some favs from other teams:

Daicos - the guy was a genius with a footy, only needed a few kicks a game to destroy you sometimes. I knew as soon as he kicked that first goal in '90 the game was over.
Carey - Best I've ever seen.
Ablett - Exhilarating.
G.(do I need to specify?)Jackovich - At his peak he was something to behold.
Kernahan - truly great mark one on one.
Rob Harvey - Love to see him run around and take blokes on with ease.

Various other Fav's:
The Krakours, W.Johnstone, D.Millane(people forget how good he was), Buckenarra, Jarman (who the hell hates him?), M.Rioli, D.Kickett, P.Roos, McCloed, Blight, Harmes, Mainwaring.

Cheers.

Just reading all these lists of who everything thinks is their greatest ever player just makes me think how pointless it is to find the one definitive greatest player of all time. There are scores of players from when the game first started to now who are revered by one and all, and without a doubt, in ten or twenty years time, we'll be saying that we saw Wayne Carey, James Hird, Nathan Buckley, Darren Jarman and company. For a variety of reasons, the Wayne Carey vs James Hird...who is better question (and it has popped up as at least three different threads on this board) just looks dumber and dumber because you are talking about minute differences in how they influence a game. What is certain is that they will be remembered in years to come, not like the hundreds of players that have been delisted over the years. What is even better is that we've been around to see them play.
