I think the current structure for running football in Australia is flawed.
As a result of the expansion of the VFL to the AFL, the AFL has now assumed some role for the overall development of the game throughout Australia. Fair Enough.
The problem I have with this is that the AFL exist to run a league...one competiton. They may take a longer term view and spend money in say Queensland...but only to the betterment of the AFL (ie eventually you may be able to support another side in the AFL from Queensland).
I cannot see the AFL supporting an intitiative which does not have any short term or long term benefit for the AFL as a competition, but does benefit football as a whole.
A good example would be football in the NT. Clearly the NT will never be able to support an AFL side...so if the AFL has a limited budget and must choose between NSW and NT then it will choose NSW....regardless of the merits of such a decision in terms of the good of the game. Supporting NSW is in the best interests of the AFL but not necessarily football as a whole.
A lot of clubs and leagues around the country are struggling due to the nationalisation of the VFL. The existance of these clubs and leagues is important for the future of the game itself (if not the AFL) but there are no funds or bodies whose mandate is the good of the game. There used to be the NFL which had a sort of over-arching role...why could we not have a similar body...funded out of the AFL, SANFL and WAFL for devloping football in the non-football states ?
but then......
