Haha peanut.

Smith has played 32 ODIs for 372 runs @22. Not 1 game has he had an influence on the result. Yep top 6 material right there.
#%£walnut.
and 21 innings and almost all of them at 7 or below, bit hard to 'influence on the result' from down there

ah i see. so he's actually not expected to do anything as he bats at 7... lucky for him. other than clogging a spot in his side, what is his role? specialist sweeper?

Your saying he is not a top 6 because his results at 7 are not good enough? At state level when he is batting higher up the order his results are ok to be considered a top 6. You are obviously a hater and only see the bad (or a troll) but there isnt a lot around at state level so you need to work with what you got and he has up side. Most said Symonds was never going to make it...

of course he can only bat where he's put... and having little other young options at state level is another valid point (several hampered by injuries, or plainly crucified by CA politics/ heirachy). but he doesnt play like an international top 6. i see him in the same light at cameron white - a bowling all rounder at a young age, then found out that his bowling was not up to scratch to take him to the top level so was forced to work on his batting. i know his shield records are ok (made a big score or 2 against the deadbacks), but he just doesnt look like a natural top 6 bat. it's great he can slap a few zacks in the ipl, but the way i see it is he'd be a handy 7 or 8 if he could bowl.

roy was a brute of a player with that x factor that could change the game in an over or 2. i think a lot of people could see that potential, but just had to wait for it. i dont see that same game changing key player potential in smith.

but i'd love to be proved wrong and have all my posts saved and quoted when smith bats at 5 or 6 and tons up one day to win us a game. cos god knows australian cricket needs it.

But he has had chances to influence the game even from 7. And he has had chances coming in earlier, I've listed them a couple of times on Big Footy. He just never does anything. Even our bowlers like Johnson and Lee will sometimes come out and value add, Smith appears to have no idea what he is meant to do even when he's come in with a lot of overs left to play. He neither sticks nor twists.

Like lincs, I'd be happy to be proved wrong because I'm fed up with the absolutely 'nothingness' feeling I get whenever I see him coming out to bat.

I would add Glenn Maxwell to that no.7 spot is a very powerful hitter, handy off spinner and brillant fielder and is being trialled for lack of a better word in the upcoming ODI series in UAE. S.marsh is an interesting one he has all the talent but has been up and down, and playing ODI level hasn't shown consitent ability to hit out against an attack. But could he play a bevan acumulator type role i am not sure, maybe more like hussey consolidate when needed or hit runs late in the innings.
i actually agree with you know. maxwell is a far better suited number 7 than smith. he can move up the order to blast as well.

Hughes cracked yet another hundred for Worcs in the 4 day comp the other day. He's our man.

Don't know why Phil Hughes hasn't played an ODI yet. 4 players since 2000 have played only Tests Martin Love, Chris Rogers, Usman Khawaja and Phil Hughes. The others have slow styles but Hughes doesn't. He is smashing in the county and should be out number 3 in ODIs and potentially even tests with Watson and Warner opening

Ed Cowan, Andrew McDonald also have't played ODIs (that's just for batsmen and all rounders, there are bowlers who haven't played ODIs but have played tests in that period).
