Who should be our new captain?

Sorry- i'm going overboard with the topics, just want everyone to get involved!

Grant is the obvious choice, but I'm thinking West may be a longer term choice (3 years younger).

Another thing against our superstar is that he isn't an outspoken/"arrogant" type (thank god for that!!!) like in the Buckley mould.
I'm not saying West is in the Buckley mould (or that this kind of captain is what is right for our club) either, but I think West really has the enthusiasm for the job (proven by his call to Steve Waugh for leadership advice), and I wouldn't want to see Grant have any unwanted pressure placed upon him, or it could even go entirely the other way, and a leadership role could prove to bring the best out of him. I just want to get your opinions.

Or another option could be Co-captains- i don't think it has been trialled for a while, and could be worth a try. I'm not really a fan of it, but who knows......

Do you reckon that Braddy Johnson might be worth a go? Young great player, can see in his play his passion for the Doggies. Also hes (dont rag me on this) a good looking young bloke and that would help with the marketing side of things i would think. Hey my mum loves him

and normally she cant stand anyone not from the Hawkks!! Agree that Grant looks the most obvious choice, but that doesnt always make it so.

He actually had tears of joy when he was drafted by the doggies in 94, that's how much it meant to him. Even younger than West and a great club man. Any one of them would be worthy candidates in my eyes, that's why I think it's going to be very interesting to see who they select.

BTW- There's nothing like the vegemite kids look to get some opposition supporters on side LOL

I don't like the idea of co-captains. I've seen it all year that when North is in trouble, it is Carey that gets the players together for "a little chat". If you have co-captains....y'know, who is the leader? Besides, I reckon most sides have a few natural leaders and can influence the players around them regardless of their title.

Anyway, I always doubted Chris Grant's ability in the pressure situation, but in the last few years, he's stood up for the Doggies when needed. A champion tall player will win you more games than a champion midfielder, and on that basis, Chris Grant gets the nod over Scott West. A friend of mine works for the Bulldogs and she says that everyone in the club looks up to him, that he's a fanstastic, down to earth guy, and that all the kids look up to him. So all angles are covered for off the field.

He can join Libba in that club of non-North players that I would love to see have premiership medals draped around their necks.

Hi ppl, well i'm here like u asked westy boy!!!

I think either West or Grant would be great as captain. West seems to really want to be captain, but i don't know if Grant does. He's handled pressure well this year and stood up in big occassions, like the Essendon game. However the captaincy might put extra pressure on him and it may affect his performace. We really need Granty at his best.

While i'm a huge Johnno fan (i have his number on my jumper) i think he hasn't had enough leadership experience, as he hasn't even been vice captain.

Agree with both of you that Grant has really stood up for us in the last couple of years. And as shinners said, a key position player has a greater chance to win you games. They are both such respected players/people at our club. But if it doesn’t affect Grant’s game as you said isdogisgood, I think I would lean towards him. It would be such a shame to have one of the greatest ever players at our club to have never been captain.

Hey I think it should be granty to be our next captain for at least the next few years he certainly deserves it.While maybe not co captains we should have co vice captains it should be johnno and westy i think personally believe that westy will be our next captain as he is already showing great leadership skills and after him it will most likely to be johnno to become captain as he is a verry marketable player everyone loves that smile as we all do.So my choice for captain is defiently granty and vice captain will be co vice aptains which will be westy and jonno.

I think Grant is the obvious choice and I am sure he would want it and expect it. He is very much respected by the other players, and I've often seen him organising the guys out on the ground.
I kind of agree with Doggiesrule about Westy and Johnno being co vice captains, but how about Rohan Smith? (I'm not biased)

I just think that Chris Grant deserves it...and it was a good point that someone made about it being a shame if one of the clubs greatest ever players was never captian.

But then i think Scott West is one of our greatest players...i mean he's got 4 B&Fs. But then Grant was VC last season. So, ok i'll stick with what i had b4 lol

Oh yeah....I rang up the AFL and asked to speak to Wayne Jackson. Jacko asked me if I was a journo, and I said "no. I just post on bigfooty.com" and he said "okay, we really do think that North and Footscray are unimportant. In fact, so are St. Kilda, Hawthorn, Geelong, and Melbourne, and we'd like to get rid of them as soon as possible. By the way, we also think that the minor premiers should get more recognition, but only if it benefits Essendon, who may I tell you, are the most important club in the AFL. We just couldn't do without them". Anyway, he made me promise not to post any of this on bigfooty, but I told him that it'd only be on the North and/or Doggies board, and he said, "okay, not many people will be reading anyway".

I don't wanna say it..... but shitbommers24 must be eliminated..... before he, Dan24, Sandie 69, Groucho12, and Arch24 eliminate us. I mean they run the competition don't they. Well Dan24 does anyway.... the AFL knows that.... just ask them. And by the way, we have found an ally in Dan (Dan24's good twin), a boozin, smokin, meat lovin guy from Werribee90224, who loves all clubs and think they each reperesent a slice of the overall picture....... and he DOESN'T use mindlessly created stats to prove it. He has emotions..... how dare he have emotions in this present day rationalistic (??) environment.... and he takes Dan24's written words on merit... despite Dan24 insistance that he be selective on what he takes literally and what he actually is trying to write.
