I wouldn't have Merrett as captain personally but I don't think they will take the captaincy of him for the following reasons.

-He's still the best leader of this group, have a look at how many names we have been put up and we still aren't 100% confident in any of them being ready or if they are the right fit.

- It would be humiliating enough for Merrett to have to walk back in after all that's happened, also, if the club wants him to feel like he's still wanted and an important part of this team what message does he get if he's stripped of the captaincy?

- If he wants out at the end of the following season as many are predicting, he would hold more value as a contracted captain?

I can see the argument for all those things, and that's probably what Hird was on about last night too. But I just don't know how the group would respond to him as leader now. You'd rather put it to an internal vote with coaches input I guess. If a majority of players do/don't want to be lead by him then that tells a lot.

But yeah, I wouldnt want him as captain.

well this is just clearly not true now.

merrett will hopefully just stand down and save us from discussing this any further

I am not sure Zach will want to be captain. If we are not looking like taking a decent step forward the dance will happen again in 12 months. Have no inside info but my feel is he will simply just want to play.

Maybe it never was.

Certainly he was / is our best player. But as we saw with GAJ at Gold Coast, you can be one of the best players of all time and still not be a great leader.

Watching the video of McGrath miked up for the game he was C versus one of Merrett doing the same was quite the contrast.

I thought earlier he could retain the captaincy but its too far gone now.

“He wants to go and chase success at Hawthorn” from his manager ensured he can’t be captain.

He can’t speak with any authority on leading the place now.

I think he’ll be back and playing well, but his captaincy days are over. He blew them up… and his manager and the Hawks left him like this.

Very implicit between the lines of his attempted departure was that his team mates are not good enough. That he was effectively sick of playing with them.

There is no way known you can have someone who’s so openly shown that sentiment remaining as skipper.

Not good enough yet and won’t be good enough soon enough. He wants to win premierships in the next two years, and Essendon will take at least another 3 to be really contending.

Meanwhile Hawthorn offer him a five year deal and didn’t bring anyone else in this year, they’ll be scraping to make finals according to their coach.

In any case a few weeks is quite a long time in football. Anything could happen. I hope it lights a fire under all of them, and McGrath is the guy who has to harness it because he seems to be just about the only bloke who can see both sides and merge them together.

the way he let his jabroni manager go about it blew up his chances to remain captain. It all went too far.

There was a different path to take and they took the bridge burning one.

and to be honest why would he even want it?

Doubt he would want the captaincy. Maybe never wanted it.

The media scrutiny if he was to remain would be forever there.

Also, as others have said he will avoid all the presser's/comms. Also makes it easier for him to request a trade in 12 months from an optics pov.

As a club moving forward, he simply must not be captain IMO.

I always said Merrett wasn’t suited to captaincy. Driven individualists set great standards but they don’t knit a side together. McGrath will happen no doubt but it would be so good if one of the others mentioned has the right attributes. I’ve got absolutely no sense of who that might be? Langford possibly?

i reckon we have enough leadership potential on the list, it’s just that the good leaders have been distracted by their own form, injury and having over-sized chins.

if they can overcome those issues, we will be okay
