Would like to see Cosgrove, just for the stink his selection would cause, and the further stink if he failed.

Seriously though, I think Cowan deserves another shot on Shield form (I don't think the young options are quite ready, either), but not sure how his move to NSW will be viewed or handled.

The selectors don't care about players moving from one shield team to the other.

It's more that Cowan sounded like playing cricket wasn't really a major priority.

I'd suggest that he got the heads up that the selectors were looking at a younger man

Cowan has potential for a future media/journalism role in the game, yes? I haven't listened to him much, but he seems to get a few gigs around the place. Quite possible he starts to move onto that phase of his career now.

Yep and Sydney would be the place to be for that.

Finch if he's less impetuous.

Recent form pretty good then?:p

Apart from Cowan (unsure of future?), the form opener is Bancroft.

Certainly wouldn't mind him to fill the "Rogers" role of steady opener to balance Warner.

This is where the eye test comes in, watching them bat and not going on statistics such as what you've done, you can see that Silk is a genuine batsman, technically proficient, patient and puts value on his wicket.
A genuine batsman? As opposed to the rest of them?

Perfect for stepping up to the next level.
It would help if he scored some runs, rather than simply passing 'the eye test'.

He probably hasn't been scoring runs due to the terrible season Tasmania had as a whole, and having to adjust to a new role at first drop which he's never played before. I'm not sure why he was played there but he just about came in very early every game with Dom Michael and co failing and obviously wasn't prepared.
Genuine batsmen should be able to adjust. No?

Genuinely laughed, most tailenders would have a better record than that. Taking out his 1 innings this season of course.

In a few years time I'm confident Silk with be test match ready and banging the door down. So SMarsh can open for a couple of years with Voges in the middle order until Silk is ready.

Of course, if Silk stagnates (which I reckon is unlikely) then Bancroft could be that man instead.

Would rather a like for like replacement, so it leaves Bancroft or Silk. Burns maybe but again I'd prefer him to be earmarked as a number 3, we have less number 3 than opening candidates. My vote would be Silk as their batting is fairly similar, Silk's fielding is out of this world good.

Steve Smith is a lock for number 3.

See this is where I disagree. I am always saying you don't change a bloke when he is averaging 60 in a set position. I would MUCH prefer Smith at 4 and get a bloke at number 3 to do a job. We don't need to be shifting Smith all over the place. You don't weaken two positions. It is the same as moving Clarke from 5 was utterly one of the most stupid decisions we made. He is a natural 5, Smith is a natural 4. Get someone at 3 that is a natural 3. Burns is probably that person actually.

Prior to the second test this summer, Smith had been batting at number 5, not 4. He seems like a natural number 3, and by the looks of it, he wants to bat there.

I've pencilled in Smithy at #3 for the next decade, so happy for Burns to get a crack opening post Rogers if his form warrants.

If the spot was available tomorrow, it has to be Cowan though.

Exactly, I think after the dangers of Watson/Warner opening together, they've seen that a steady hand is a better mix.

It's an absolute myth that Watson was some sort of attacking force as an opening batsman.

He averaged 41 as an opener striking at 52.

Rogers averages 39 striking at 48.

Watson wasn't exactly smashing them around. In fact, much like Rogers he was excellent at taking the shine off the ball and then getting out between 50 and 100 when a century was there for the taking.

In fact, he usually got himself out when he tried to lift the scoring rate.

Cowan was the real go slow, striking at 41 while Warner is at 74.

Rogers has shown an ability to lift the rate, you need to be able to do both and play the situation.
