Craig Bolton ... everyone's hoping there is another Craig Bolton out there

The thing with Bolton though - he couldn't crack a senior gig in a team that had won 2 flags

We are picking up blokes who can't get a game in a side that wins the wooden spoon.
ahh yeah forgot about bolton. also just remembered peter bell delisted after 2 games. tom harley(1 game) also came to mind although he was traded for pick 37

No amount of passion could save Dalziell from his lack of natural ability.

So this is why they call it the silly season. Blokes like Dalziell who play with heart and passion for the jumper get delisted but hacks like the player pictured below keep there spot

TURN IT UP WEST COAST

Dalziell is never going to be more than a bog average player. No matter how much passion or effort he had, he had reached that ceiling and it was pretty low, much like a thousand blokes in lower leagues.
Smith could be more than that. Who gives a shit what his hair looks like.

well that was an interesting choice of delistings..and a learning curve..in this topics cut and thrust, with all the names mentioned as potential delistings, some of us forgot about contracts..some posters did try to remind us..

given that, then its fair to say others will be gone from that list when their contracts expire next year..also mcginnity and butler have some big game experience between them, which can still be handy in rotations or depth, even if theyre on the outer..yeh,a bit tough for dazzle, just not enough razzle? morton, well just couldnt see anything there in his outings compared to wilson, carter, tunbridge for example...

having just read article about how tough, ruthless and clever the pies have been with their list and trades, we need to follow that example sooner than later..and seem to be doing that, more class players please..with kerr gone, that midfielder!!! ;)

The players I've bolded (18 of them) are no guarantee to be at the club beyond 2014 - obviously a lot of them will be retained but they are all either approaching retirement or have question marks over their ability at AFL level (Ellis has the ability but his body might not hold up).

We aren't going to be short of blokes to delist next year and might help explain why we've cut Dalziell and Morton now rather than wait a year

That really clears it up then. Effectively, Morton, Dalziell and Wilson were the only options to delist this year then and finding two from that group... well, the majority of us would have picked the same two players.

Dalziell was nothing but depth, reached the pinnacle of his talents as others have said. Would have to be playing on his mind after having his best year though. Such is the reality of AFL football, however. Morton was always a hail mary, I mean come on - pick 88. Might as well have been rookie listed.

A LOT of dead weight bolded above there. Butler, McGinnity, Smith, Newman, McInnes need big years or they're gone. I think most of the board is unnaturally harsh on Sheppard and I'd like to see him at the club in 2015.

Does delisting Razzle and Morton mean that the club believes Newman is in the clear with his charges and will fine to play on the senior list next year or is it still a possibility of him being rookied/delisted in the future?

No amount of passion could save Dalziell from his lack of natural ability.

I have been a fan of dalziells this year but understand why he was delisted.
Just out of interest do you think smith has the passion to make a career out of footy?Undoubtedly he should have the physical tools ,what do you think is holding him back?he has plenty of knockers here, divided between those who don't like his style(tatts, hair, etc) and those who think he is just plain lazy(my opinion).you seem to see something that most don't,what is it?

maybe he's just not very smart.

Decision making and injury. Obviously he's a shark and doesn't attack the ball and that annoys people, but on the flip side he plays pretty tight on his opponent and he's at his best when he can play that understated defensive role which generally gets missed by supporters and then runs off well. The problem is when we're under siege like in 2013 and he has to go for the ball he often won't (eg: Brown and Smith **** up late in the season). I take the good with the bad.

Smith isn't naturally a strong endurance player, i think that's confused with laziness and once you throw in his playing style and appearance...

It staggers me how few posters read Jimmy the Gent's contract thread.

We can delist players who are contracted, but people should be aware of the costs involved.

So, if it is a choice between a contracted and uncontracted player, there would have to be a damn good reason to get rid of the contracted player.

I am disappointed for Dalziell as he was clearly passionate about the club
Couldn't agree more. Might not be the most talented player in the league, but he sure as hell wore the wings with more pride than most this year.

Good delistings.

Dalziell is a tryer with little talent and poor decision making skills. He's also 26/27 with no scope for improvement and adds nothing to a team that wants to develop into a premiership winning one.

Morton, as I've said in the past, I don't have anything against...I just don't see where his improvement is and what he really adds to the team...is far too reliant on being in space with no pressure (which is rare at AFL level, but what allowed him to dominate lower levels), and just probably isn't worth the space when we could fill it with an untried kid who may offer more long-term.

people need to put emotions aside- this is just about sensible list management by west coast.

dalziell had some useful games for us in 2013 but i would be very surprised to see either of them play afl again. you'd imagine mcginnity goes next year once his contract is up.

at any rate, thanks for your service and good luck to both!

This !!! There is no question Dalziel and Morton both have talent. Dalzeil I think, simply has reached the end of his and there is no scope for improvement. In Morton's case, he has undoubted talent, makes goss decisons abd all of that but has not taken the next step. Had we the luxury of being in a beteer position both could have stayed but there is a need to move on. The only other player on the list (other than those who are young and have not had an opportunity) who has no scope for improvement is Priddis and he will remain as the club does need th experience and someone to do some grunt work. Interesting to note that with only Glass and Cox left of the oldies and Waters, Priddis and Butler on the horizon, we will now have one of the youngest lists. Anyway, despite the tough call on both Morton and Dalzeil, this is the exact right decision. I hope it is a sign that the other decisions on draft choices, trades and coaching appointments turn out equally as correct.
