Feel a bit for Dalziel but the club makes the decision.
Mcginnity should buy a lotto ticket, Dalziel is 5 times the player and he gets cut.
Mind boggling really. But they must have their reasons.

As has been mentioned, McGinnity is under contract and Dalz wasn't...

IMO Hutchings is the only midfielder from our current playing group that is prepared to put his head over the footy and do the hard stuff. He goes in much like Kerr in that he thinks of getting the ball ahead of his own safety. We could do with more midfielders with that same mentality.

I heard that Selwood Bloke goes alright.;)

Dalziell is gone. Dead wood, sure he may have tried but he offers us nothing going forward. Better to get games into someone else who could possibly have a future. And when they don't we cut them and move onto the next kid.

Dalziell and Morton are both ho-hum players, but it does seem odd to cut a guy after he just played 17/22 games and was far from our worst performer. Only one of our midfielders to kick double figure goals (15) too, which is pretty good for a guy with a reputation for doing no damage with the ball.

Still, list spots are at a premium as we find room for guns like Jamie Bennell.

AFL is a brutal business and its pretty clear we had become a bit of a soft refuge for WA footballers dropped from Eastern States teams in recent years and this has to stop. We need to get back to being ruthless with players who don't cut it and there is no room for being sentimental like with Dalziell and Morton who couldn't cut it at below average AFL clubs.

Yep i agree and we seem to accommodate pretty much any WA player good or bad back to the club.

Lol - this. Finding it a little hard understanding why people aren't getting this. This is the reason some got delisted while others that probably should have didn't.

This.

Seriously though, who gives a rats if it costs us money? The guy does not deserve a spot on the list with his output and lack of skill. If Dalziell is cut because he has no skill but provides twice the output, how the hell does McSpuddity stay on the list? Contract or no contract he is not best 44 so i'd rather have Dalziell as depth to cover injuries than McGinnity. Once the new draftees step up and can cover the best mids or become our best mids, then we get rid of him. he should of had one more year at least IMO.

I assume the payout is included in the salary cap? Yes/No.

If it is its probably not worth it (unless you are Ash Hansen).

It is, but we have Kerr, Selwood, Embley retiring who would be on big coin, and McGinnity would not, so i doubt it would bother our club to pay him out. Seems a strange decision to have two guys with less than elite skills, but keep the one that give you virtually no output but cut the other one, especially when the other one has had scoreboard impact for you this year.

It's not just money, it's salary cap.

Ie. Delist McGinnity, offer Dalziell a contract. Draft a kid to replace McGinnity. Pay all 3 players. Exceed 100% of salary cap. Lose draft picks and receive large fine.

OR

Do what we did, pay 2 players being McGinnity + the draftee and maintain the status quo.

If we were paying 92.5% of the cap, I daresay some of the players still on our list may have been in danger of being cut despite their contractual status, but if a player is contracted and salaries are managed as they should be at a professional organisation, there wouldn't be that much room to move.

EDIT: Beaten to it but I'll leave it here anyway.

How can we be over the salary cap or near it for next year when we've just lost Kerr, Embley & Selwood? All of which would be on the higher salaries in the club?

McGinnity's skills may be low quality, but for people to say he's "not best 44" is laughable. Was the 2012 finals series really that long ago?

He had a couple of ok games in 3 or 4 years of playing footy and has been way below AFL standard this year when played. Dalziell has contributed more in more games and yet gets labelled not good enough, so how does McGinnity get a free pass?

He had a contract, his season was stuffed before it began due to a back injury, and his previous three seasons were better than Dalziell's.

You don't think the club would have planned for older players to retire and worked that into contracts of the younger guys?

Plus we've brought in Yeo and Ellis, who whilst wouldn't be on big money would certainly be on a lot more than a draftee.

I disagree about any of his seasons being better than Dalziells. McGinnity has been overrated by our MC and coach for all of the time he has played for us IMO. Dalzeill has been no superstar when he's played for us but he has more to offer than McGinnity, even if its just as coverage for injured mids until our new draftees take his place. He might be a great bloke, but I cant understand why he's on the list to be honest.

They've only just retired, and some of that was on the back of injury and a change in coach so i dont think they would have used any of that money yet. I'd be surprised if we offered big money deals to anyone presently.

Dalziel is a more talented footballer than McGinnity, Most footballers are! But they play vastly different roles as well. Clearly a contract has saved McGinnity. He will play the year for the Royal Eagles unless we are smashed with injuries again.
There will be a number of players on their final chance in 2014. Simpson will look around for a year while he puts in place his new plan. Players that just try hard won't get through the loop anymore. If you can't kick you can't play. Any player without premium kicking skills will not survive under Simpson I reckon.
