Bloodstained Angel
Premiership Player
Sorry ! - I first posted this on general talk but meant to put here in AFL Board instead.
Back in the old days when there was only one field umpire, it was quite common to see a teams best on-baller regularly roughed up, and, well, just 'taken out' really behind the play.
The practice was called sniping and in those days rovers, ruckmen, midfielders and others indentified as big possession getters and big movers for each team had to be pretty rugged kinda blokes to be able to take that sort treatment week after week.
Which raises the question - in today's game where cheap shots have largely been policed out of the game, who would be able to hack it if we played the game like we used to ?
You know the guy I am talking about - the dead set champion ball-player who just 'rides the bumps' and keeps on with great play, inspite of what might be dished out to him.
Alot of people reckon hardly any of the current crop could hack it in those conditions, I dunno. I think there are a few about and here is a list of 'em.
What do you think ?
Adelaide : Ricciutto
Brisbane - Chris Scott
Carlton - They are hard, but Ratten is a real stand out
Collingwood - O'Bree
Essendon - Another team full of hard guys, of all them I think Mark Johnson would be able to play in any old style footy team.
Fremantle - Troy Cook
Geelong - Hocking
Hawthorn - Tony Woods would go close. (close but no cigar, that is)
Kangaroos - Blakey
Melbourne - Nobody since Todd Viney retired
Port Adelaide - Mead (the guy is a virtual time warp)
Richmond - Clinton King surprises with his tenacity and ability to absorb the punishment.
St Kilda - Burke and Harvey (thanks Strength thru Loyalty)
Sydney - Kelly (pre 1998 injuries certainly, the true spiritual successor to the likes of Skilton, Whitten, etc) and Cresswell as well.
WCE - Worsfold, Worsfold, Worsfold ( I miss him !)
Western Bulldogs - West can absorb an amazing amount of punishment
cheers
