OK i saw a topic like this in the AFL board with sports people.......

Heres mine

(1) Pele : A great Player, amazing skill, and also a great personality after retiring, something we cant say about the guy at #2! Their were great players in the Brazilian team in the 70's, Jairzinho, Tostao, Rivelinho, Carlos Alberto ; But Pele was the one to stand out from a wonderful team.

(2) Maradona : A superb player, genius like, no one will ever be as good as maradona. In my eyes a better player than Pele, but also an outright IDIOT!. Unfortunately drugs finished Diego off.

(3)Marco Van Basten : What an amazing player, the best to ever come out of Europe, unfortunately Injuries got the best of him.

(4) Romario : The little Genius. Extremelly Lazy but with an amazing goal record. Has played in about every major league, won a world cup, and has shown he can be a consistent scorer for over 10 years. Hes 34 still playin, scored like 54 goals last season in the Brazilian League and Cup. Will be known as a legend when he retires.

(5) Maldini/Baresi ; I think these players needed a mention. Cant split them. Two fo the best defenders ever. Were the fierce pairing in the Milan defence for years, and were simply umberlievable!

OK....maybe a little conntroversial selections by me..oh well, but other great Players defently are : Platini, Best, Charlton, (The guy from Portugal, cant think of his name!), Hagi, Batistuta,Scifo etc etc...

What are your top 5???

Paolo Di Canio (Italy, West Ham)
Julian Dicks (England, West Ham)
Joe Cole (England, West Ham)
Frank Lampard Jnr. (England, West Ham)
Ludek Miklosko (Czechoslovakia, West Ham)

Quite a balanced group of players I think.

QT, are you thinking of Eusbuio? (I think I've got the spelling wrong).

Anyway, the five best Manchester United players that I've seen (I really can't be arsed about non-United players :D )

1. Eric Cantona. The catalyst for United's success. As George Best said, "Cantona gave the United team a brain". It wasn't just the goals he scored, but the way he scored them....many were an absolute joy to watch. He cost the Reds a mere 1.2 million pounds from Leeds.

2. Norman Whitesite. Not only was he the youngest player to have played in the World Cup, he was also the youngest to score in the World Cup Finals. He was able to win tackles, was a beautiful passer of the ball, and a lethal shot at goal. A chronic leg injury initially forced a positional change from striker to midfield. Eventually, he was sold by United to Everton, before injuries finally ended his career at the age of 25. When United broke their title drought, Whiteside was still younger than championship medal winners Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes.

3. Peter Schmeichel. Or the Big Daft Sod as the United mailing list faithful would call him. The best modern day goalkeeper, and easily the best keeper that I've seen. People often talk about goals scored to win championships, but Schmeichel would often save goals that other keepers would never have even managed to get a hand to. He was also an attacking keeper, he was able to set up play from his long throws (which he developed from playing European handball at a young age).

4. Roy Keane. The key to United's championship domination of recent years. He just dominates and polices the midfield, allowing the more creative players like Giggs, Beckham, and Scholes to do their work.

5. Bryan Robson. Captain Marvel. An earlier version of Roy Keane. He had a legendary appetite for beer, but somehow managed to run it off during training. Like Keane, he just controlled the midfield, often running himself into the ground (often because the players around him were total sh*te), but he managed to finish his career with two championship medals to his name.

Di Canio made Barthez look pretty stupid! :) Then again, he makes a lot of shit-kickers look pretty stupid.

I know Shinners! If i look abck i recon i fergot alot of Players. I think Beckanbauer was prob a better defender than Maldini/Baresi. And Cryuff, well i think hell have to take the place of fellow dutchman Van Basten! But there are so many great players !

There have been a number of polls over here on this subject especially at the end of 1999 & the consensus seemed to be

1/Pele
2/Maradonna
3/Cruyff
4/DiStefano
5/Eusebio

Although Pele once said about George Best 'He is the most skillful player that I have ever seen in my life'

Anyone ever think Ronaldo would have been near the top ten if it wasnt for injuries??

Hey Magpie-feltch, did you actually watch the world cup? Did you notice how he actually single handidly got Italy into the final? Ok he missed the penalty, it doesn't change the fact that he is and always will be one of the greatest Italian players ever. Oh yeah, and how about WC 98???? He totally transformed Italy in the quarter final Vs France and he converted his Penalty in the PK shoot out.

Anyway thats not the point, he has been the the leading goalscorer in the best and hardest league IN THE WORLD for the past 10-15 years so show some respect.

I'd have Messi in there somewhere.

QT

You also forgot Franz Backenbauer and Johann Cryuff.

Best five current United players (just to make these Toffees and Hammers look stupid):

1. Keane
2. Stam
3. Beckham
4. Barthez
5. Scholes

Say What?:drunk:

George Best
Ryan Giggs
Bobby Charlton
Cristiano Ronaldo
Eric Cantona/ Dennis Law

None of the blokes you mentioned, are in the best 5.

the best 5 i have seen play in no particular order- Lionel Messi, Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Pele, Franz Beckenbauer.

favorites from my childhood- Peter Osgood, Trevor Francis, Bobby Moore, John Hollins, Ray Wilkins, Peter Bonetti.

To think when this thread died. Brisbane had yet to win a flag and Carlton never had a spoon!

Common opinion normally means in no particular order.

Maradona
Pele
Cruyff
Puskas
Zidane

You have clearly got the the top 3 in the correct order. The next are up for grabs including Puskas and Zidane as you mention plus Messi, Best, Charlton, Ronaldo (the fat one), Eusebio, Platini, Beckenbauer.
