Congratulations on the win Saints fans - Can anyone tell me what the derivation of the name "Saint Kilda" is? I looked up the "Oxford Book of Saints" and he/she was not listed. Is the suburb named after a place in England.

This is not a troll I just thought someone on here might know.

PS: Guerra is a great pick up for you and there was nothing in the Ling hit - eyes for the ball

I thought it was an island off the coast of Ireland??? I can't remember the story, but I think it was called something else but someone made a spelling mistake when naming it?? Bloody funny though.

from the St.Kilda Historical Society.

The first building to be erected in St.Kilda was Baxter’s hut, probably the dwelling place of Baxter’s stockman, and a plaque in Alfred Square commemorates the site.
Thomas Enscoe and Co. had taken over Baxter’s lease, and were in possession of the land when the Government decided to establish a village there in 1842. Even though its first locality name was Green Knoll, in the first Government surveys the area was officially called Fareham, after a watering place near Portsmouth. However, the name that stuck was St.Kilda, named after a schooner The Lady of St.Kilda, anchored long enough in the bay to be associated with the shore nearby. The lady in question was supposedly Lady Grange, imprisoned on the Hebredian island of St.Kilda in 1734 by her husband, ‘for 17yrs until her death, remonstrating with him about his schemes to restore the fortunes of Bonnie Prince Charlie.’

And St kilda was a hell of a place to be left. I think it was evacuated in the 30s? Too harsh a place to live - awful winters making it difficult for the last residents to survive. I think they get some tourism but its a pretty hard place to get out to.

Unsurprisingly the Americans have a military base on the Island.

And there is no such "saint"as St.Kilda.And actually St.Kilda is closer to Scotland then it is to Ireland.

The St.Kildas is a group of Islands off the Northern Scottish coast.

Apparently bloody horrible.

Was settled for about 100 years, but was eventually evacuated early last century. Aparently just a rock out in the ocean.
