the Jack Frost role.

And Golds for Scharenberg...

I think Smith will play a few games after some solid work in the VFL.

Cox might get a shot in the second half of the season depending how Brody and Wittsy's form is going.

The 40th man must be named before round 1. Any LTI promotions for Scharenberg etc can be done any stage of season.

Mason Cox easily.

If Grundy or Witts go out of form or get injured he becomes super important
It can't be Cox, he is outside our list of 44.
Hence the nominated upgrade must come from Cat A rookies Gault, Smith or Golds.
Which as others have mentioned must happen before season commencement.
Cox can be upgraded for LTI as & when required (i.e he is about to be selected in the senior side).

I wasn't aware of that rule

Tim Golds, reckon we could find a role for him as we lack outside players that can play back flank or wing.

Mason Cox could be the man in 2017. Don't think Bucks will take a punt on him unless Grundy or Witts goes down.

On my reading, the rules (Section 10, AFL Rules) don't actually stipulate it has to be Cat A rookie, it just says "rookie list"

10.17 Nominated Rookies – Mid Season
(a) Clubs may nominate Rookies
(i) A Club may nominate one Player from its Rookie List as being available for selection by the Club for Home and Away and Finals Series Matches at any time after the conclusion of Round 11 before 2.00pm on the Tuesday after the last round of Home and Away Matches by lodging with the AFL the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 36.
(ii) This right of a Club to nominate a Rookie Player under this Rule is subject to the Club demonstrating to the satisfaction of the Investigations Manager that it can accommodate within its Total Player Payments Football Payments which must be paid to the Rookie Player as prescribed in Rule 10.17(b).

BJ, that's for the mid season upgrade, which I believe is open to all rookies, however the pre season upgrade must come from Cat A list to prevent a club starting the season with more than 44 listed players (senior/Cat A rookie lists).

Yep, but the wording is the same for all rookie upgrades, its just that the section is much longer.
The Rules in relation to upgrades make no distinction between Cat A and Cat B rookies

But here it is anyway:

10.11 Inclusion of Rookie List Player onto Primary List
(a) Prohibition – Playing in AFL Competition
A Player included on a Club’s Rookie List shall not play for the Club in the AFL Competition except for the Pre-Season Competition.
(Refer also Rule 5.7)
(b) Primary List
A Club may apply to the AFL to transfer a Player or Players from its Rookie List onto its Primary List:
(i) on the day when its Primary List is lodged with the AFL prior to the National Draft Selection Meeting under Rule 6.1 by lodging with the AFL the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 33. In which case, the Club shall forfeit its last selection or, if more than one player, its last and each previous draft selection at the National AFL Draft Selection meeting.
(ii) under Rule 26.1(b); or
(iii) at any time between the National Draft Selection Meeting and the day when its Primary List is lodged with the AFL prior to the Pre-Season Draft Selection Meeting under Rule 7.1, if a Player’s name has been deleted from that Club’s List under Rule 7.6 by lodging with the AFL the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 33.
(c) Primary List during AFL Season
A Player included on a Club’s Rookie List shall not be promoted onto the Primary List of an AFL Club during the Home and Away Matches or while it continues to compete in the Finals Series save and except under Rule 26.1(b) or where an AFL Club demonstrates to the AFL that there are exceptional and compelling circumstances that make it harsh and unconscionable for a Rookie not to be promoted onto that AFL Club’s Primary List and where to do so would not result in that AFL Club exceeding the maximum number of Players on its Primary List.
(d) Maintain Primary List
Where a Club applies to the AFL to transfer a Player from its Rookie List onto its Primary List in accordance with Rule 10.11(b), it must de-list a Player from its Primary List if that is necessary to ensure that the Club does not exceed the number of Players it is able to retain on its Primary List as required under Rule 5.3.

Nah not buying this... surely you can choose any rookie cat B or otherwise as the nominated rookie.

I can't find any rule that says a list can't exceed 44 players, on the contrary the rule says a list cant exceed 47 players
(Player Rules: List Sizes Appendix 1, page 200)

And what if we had decided to go with no Cat B rookies and with 7 Cat A rookies instead, how would some of those 7 Cat A rookies be excluded from an upgrade if we chose?

So you are telling me we can upgrade a Cat B rookie, thereby bringing our senior list to 40, whilst having 5 Cat A rookies, hence we start the season with 45 players (40 senior + 5 Cat A rookies).
Good luck with convincing the AFL on that one.
The ONLY reason we can upgrade a nominated rookie, is because we chose to finalise our list with 39 senior & 5 rookies, if we had gone for 40 & 4 then we could NOT upgrade prior to season (except for LTI, which is a seperate situation).
List choices are:
38 & 6 (with 2 nominated rookies)
39 & 5 (with 1 nominated rookie)
40 & 4 (with no nominated rookies)
