Definitely Mason Cox should be that nominated rookie at the right time. He can play senior footy next year and it's not out of the question he passes Jarrod Witts by.

I see no need to upgrade any of our other rookies, even with Scharenberg and his ACL. We should have a strong enough senior group to keep all other rookies out of the senior side and I'd be more concerned than encouraged if the likes of Gault, Golds or to a lesser extent Smith are required to play senior footy.
Impeccable. Yes agree.
The ONLY caveat for me is for some reason a rookie goes beyond the level that he is a must for senior football.

Cox is my interesting player, if he could be a good senior footballer who can take strong marks forward well he could be the missing piece and further Cloke support

Yes it does.
AFL list rules clearly state:
Max primary list 40
Cat A list max 6
However combined they must come to no more than 44.
38 + 6 = 44
39 + 5 = 44
40 + 4 = 44

Cat B rookies are outside main list & can be up to max 3.
Overall max is 47 of which 3 would have to be Cat B rookies.
We have 46 players. 39 + 5 + 2 = 46
However we cannot have 40 + 5 + 1 = 46

There are also strict TPP rules that govern how rookie salaries are handled.
I understand what you are saying, I just disagree with your interpretation.

Cox would still be a Cat B rookie he would just be eligible to play as the nominated rookie. He doesn't suddenly become a senior player and part of the TPP as a result.

If the rule is that you can upgrade a cat B rookie at mid year but not at the start of the year that would make no sense to me.

Anyway I guess we can just agree to disagree as its a moot point in any case. What will be will be
