Sheds & Grimes should be added to the list,But once again both have been ignored by even our own.
Rioli & Higgins have potential.
But if you want to compare the likes of Cotch/Dusty & Jack from day one then we havn't drafted him yet.

Grimes IS elite.

Vlastuin has a good chance.

Edwards may be - he's too quick for me to be sure.

My left field choice - Butler.

This is a good thread, I agree with Mopsy that you’d need to define elite.
For me, it is consistently being in the best few of your position in the competition over several seasons.
That rules out Cotchin as a mid but rules him in as a leader. The most selfless leader in the AFL - has arrived as a Tiger immortal as a captain.
Rance, Dusty and Jack speak for themselves in relation to AA’s, B&F’s, Coleman’s etc

Lynch has not yet delivered consistently due to injury and the jury is still out until we see that knee fixed.

Floss, Shedder, Caddy, Prestia are all capable of elite football but consistency or injury have/are preventing them from being considered elite.
Of that group, a fully fit Dion Prestia is a star that people don’t fully appreciate outside the Tiger circle.

In terms of potential, Turbo and Rioli are the two. Jack Graham perhaps but I didn’t see enough in season 2 to think he might be more than a solid mid.

That leaves Dylan Grimes as the obvious, stand out elite player - probably our best defender last season.
Now he’s over his injury issues, he has become a truly great defender and hopefully he finally wins AA next year - it’s overdue and fully deserved.

Lynch imo is Elite , You mention he has not delivered consistently due to his injuries but his numbers stack up

Also need to keep in mnd that tom Lynch has achieved these numbers whilst playing for Gold Coast who has been the worst club in his entire time there, Its extremely hard almost impossible to rack up these type of stats with such a bad team

It was a nasty knee, I’m more so referring to the impact of his knee going forward...

Was a PCL its not as bad as an ACL from what i have read or been told, Its not like a Docherty injury but more along the lines of Prestia's but not as bad
Jaeger O'Meara is / was probably the worst of all the GC players i have read about

No, he was amazing in 2017 as well. Outside of that and his breakout year in 2012 - purely in footballing terms - he wouldn’t be in the top few mids in the comp
Abit tough on Cotch. Was made Captain of a very young and less talented side and still win a Brownlow.

Agreed. Was incredible in 2012, remodelled his game and was sublime in 2017. Best capt in Comp. I was commenting on him purely as an elite mid.

Rioli and Collier-Dawkins. Rioli gets a full pre-season this year and Collier-Dawkins is skillful, tough and 193cm and growing.

Lynch will have an interrupted preseason which will impact on 2019. But over the next couple of seasons I think he'll thrive at a good club. Prestia has played some great footy too. Especially the finals in 2017. If he can stay fit he will be considered elite. He has got an issue with his disposal which nudges him out the 'elite' rankings. By definition, elite is a small group of superior people so Rance & Vlas, who do the unusual, will come into consideration more than Grimes or Astbury who are negating defenders. If Sheds kicked the ball better he'd be elite. Jack R is elite. Dusty's year was a bit flat too. Did spend time forward. But the brownlow keeps him in the elite group for another year or 2.

I reckon it's better to have a few 'under the radar' guys (Grimes, Vlastuin, Broad, Lambert etc.) who quietly go about their business and get the job done...
With the salary cap no team can have more than a few elite players. And of our elite players, Dusty (looked flat from round 1[but played fwd quite a bit too]) Cotch (didn't play 4 qtrs) & Rance let the diving thing get into his head) and played within himself. They have credits in the bank so they stay in the elite bracket for another year and while they get on the field so regularly.
Despite this we ended up on top of the ladder at the end of the H&A season so we can win with JR having a great season. And the everyone else Grimes, Vlas, Broad, Lambert, play their role, executing the game plan. I hope the pressure we lose with a Castagna /Butler being dropped are compensated with goals & ruck support.

Just reinforces how good the great man Richo was IMO.

Reckon Lynch, injuries barring, has the best opportunity to go the next level consistently. The elite do it on a consistent basis - just look at how consistent our star players are. Easily in Lynch’s grasp.

Who's your top 5 mids of the comp?
Fyfe, Dusty, Danger, Sidebottom, Oliver, T Mitchell, Cripps and probably Gaff are the best mix of mids when you weigh up the different qualities you need to be an elite mid. For instance, I wouldn’t have Gaff for ball winning but no one runs harder, I wouldn’t have T Mitchell in for metres gained but he’s an incredible ball winner. Fyfe is the only contentious one due to injury but in reality in pure football terms is probably the best player in the comp for all round footballing ability so I can’t leave him out...
