A 100 point turn around from the completely irrelevant round 4 match.

Round 4 was about par for Melbourne this year. Last few weeks of the season massively flattered them, and media too stupid to notice.

They came into round 22 having beaten zero top 8 sides for the season. They get WC without Kennedy, NicNat and Gaff , and then Darling goes down in the first few minutes of the game to leave them down their 4 best players. You can see today what a difference having your two best forwards in does.

They then get GWS the next week at the MCG, a ground where GWS have now won one of their last 8 games at.

They make finals and get matched up with Geelong in week one. Geelong is a team that wouldn't even have been in the top 8 if Melbourne hadn't completely choked in both their games against them. Melbourne manage to not make the same mistake a third time despite going to sleep for a large portion of the game.

The next week they get Hawthorn, who arguably has the weakest midfield in the top 8. They get them without O'Meara. They also injure Mitchell in the first quarter and he plays over 3 quarters with a ruptured AC joint, and would likely not have played the next week with the injury. So basically we were down our two best mids in a team with almost no midfield depth. We usually get some input from players like Burgoyne to pad our depth, but turns out he played both finals jabbed up with broken ribs, which explains his fairly poor performances. Lost our most consistent defender of the year from injury after the Tigers game too. We didn't have 12 years of tanking to pad our depth, so while Melbourne had outs too, they impacted the shallow Hawthorn list a s**t load more. Despite our midfield being decimated by injury, we actually destroy the Melbourne midfield in the second quarter, but with a return of 0-6, we shoot ourselves in the foot, and Melbourne take the game away from us in the second half , winning comfortably, but with only 3 more scoring shots than us for the day. In other words a win with a lot of fortunate context going Melbourne's way, further inflating the misconception of Melbourne as flag threat.

Today with Kennedy and Darling back in the side, we get a glimpse of where Melbourne are really at, which is about where they were at when we smashed them in round 4 this season. Viney and McDonald simply not the difference many were touting them as. The main thing that changed that allowed them to finally get some wins against top 8 sides was a very fortunate sequence of circumstances. Melbourne have a very good list, but still lack in a few key areas. Leaky backline and midfield with too much brawn and not enough finesse.

12 years of tanking? Wtf are you even on about?

We beat you fair and square. Get over it and stop being such a sooky princess.

You beat us the same way you beat WC a few weeks before. Took your chances after very fortunate pre and in-game injuries to your opponent. Inflated the media's assessment of your chances today, and when WC had two key players back in, we saw how far off Melbourne really are. Not having a sook, just pointing out how the media were sucked in, and that today was somewhat predictable.

Yeah yeah. Jog on sweetheart.

Agreed, but what were your players doing today.

You are a sooky sooky lah lah aren't you.

Actually I was pretty happy with our finals series. Didn't have a lot of luck go our way, and got a few games into players who hadn't seen finals before. Melbourne will be pleased to have done the same I imagine, but today will offset the confidence boost that came from the first two wins. Still think today was a better representation of Melbourne's year than the last 4 games leading up to the prelim was. Key injuries to opponents and getting GWS at a ground they suck on flattered you. This wasn't Melbourne's first capitulation of the year against good opposition. Melbourne still have one of the most promising lists in the top 8, but have more holes to fill than the fawning media of the last few weeks admitted.

Normally I like you as a poster as you present your thoughts in a good way.

These last few posts however have been shocking. You are coming across as a twat.

Not your finest work

You don't agree that WC's and Hawthorn's outs and in-game injuries in Melbourne's previous games in the last 4 weeks didn't contribute to the media overrating Melbourne's chances today?
I dont care for tearing them down, they made a prelim which if further than most thought they'd get
Wasnt a great performance today but they've tasted finals now
H&A means nothing come finals and they won two more finals than us so why he critical of them.
Its not Dees supporters or pkayers fault that the media pumped them up

H&A means nothing come finals

I think Melbourne's H&A form prior to the round 22 WC game was a better prediction of what was going to happen today than their past 4 weeks, which was partly the result of some good fortune on Melbourne's part. Today's loss looked a lot more like the previous H&A capitulations to Hawthorn, Richmond and Magpies than it did the recent wins over depleted WC and Hawthorn teams. Even the Geelong H&A games were a decent predictor of their win over Geelong, because they should have won both of those with more composure.

In the end, the right team won today, and for the record I don't think it mattered who won our SF, even with a fit O'Meara, Stratton and Mitchell, I don't think we'd have gotten close to WC. It should have been obvious Melbourne were not up to it either if you looked closely at the context.

Keep digging Princess, your only making a bigger troll of yourself.

You should know that once your own supporters turn on you, then you are losing the argument.

And you have lost this one big time.

They took a step this year. They won a game they needed to and made finals
They won finals

Interstate prelims are very hard to win, they had a bad day today for sure but that doesn't change the fact they made the prelim, it just says they weren't ready to go further

I love watching a sore loser having a massive melt

they weren't ready to go further

Which is pretty much what I've said. I'd go a step beyond that and say they hadn't actually progressed as much as many had thought. This game was seen as pretty much a 50/50 prior to the game (despite it being in Perth), with a 2.5 point line. I'm questioning why that was the case, given their form against the top 8 prior to the last handful of games, in which players available for their opponents had a fairly large impact on results.

I think the Geelong win was important given it showed a mental hardness they'd lacked in the previous two encounters against Geelong, and I liked the way they didn't roll over when we came at them in the last quarter in the SF. However, too much was made out of wins over WC and Hawthorn when both had notable pre and in-game outs. I'm sorry Melbourne fans take offence to that opinion, but I don't feel the need to tip-toe around Melbourne supporters feelings. Have a look at them get into Saints fans earlier in this thread when Saints season went pear shaped. I can see how Melbourne fans wouldn't like the suggestion that the prelim result said more about where they are at than the previous 4 weeks of footy did, and it is an opinion they are welcome to disagree with. Being called a village idiot because I think Melbourne had become overrated due to ignoring some important context makes it seem like Melbourne fans enjoy dishing out on other teams but can't handle a negative opinion on their own season.

I think Dees fans know how their season ended.

Time for bed Princess, time to suck on mummy's nipple and cry yourself to sleep.

Seriously, just give it away, Melbourne won two finals games, Hawthorn went out in straight sets for the second time in a row.
