Collingwood and Melbourne are infinitely closer to reaching flag 17 before the Blues and Bombers. Hell the way the Hawks rack up flags I would say even they would be even money to reach number 17 before the Blues and Bombers. Carlton and Essendon have just had their periods of dominance over the last few decades and are both in for long periods in the wilderness. I can't see either of them winning a flag in the next decade at least.

Essendon's midfield is the worst in the league by a mile and with the way the modern game is played and with no hope of building through the draft for a couple of years the Bombers will not win one this decade.

Carlton bottomed out at the right time to assemble the greatest list of young players in the league. Expect the Blues to be challenging within the next season or two.

Collingwood if they can overcome a culture of "second best is good enough" potentially could win a couple however they are playing catch up.

ditto Melbourne - have a an exciting bunch of youngsters however its hard enough to win one ; they need four just to catch up.
