IMO one Melbourne club will disband in the next 3 years. Out of the struggling clubs, who has the resources and resolve to survive? IMO the only thing keeping these clubs from falling over is the television agreement.

The umpires will go first.

They will be replaced by the Channel Nine Commentary team who will umpire from the commentary box.

God! I hope not! That would take all the fun out of the game! Imagine not having any white maggot to abuse when they stuff up a decision!

You can abuse Eddie instead!

Jeez, these forcasts are as acurate as predicting the weather in Melbourne.

For the past 5 years they been saying North will go under, no Carey no North, blah blah blah.

We may be not financially sound, but neither were Collingwood 5 years ago. And yes I know North doesn't have the millions of fans like the Pies, but I am merely saying that cash flows can be turned around, just as the Roos can and have performed without Wayne.

Spouting this kind of stuff is like North fans predicting we would have won two more flags if Buckley had come to the Roos.

Rohan, I respect your passion for you club and love of the game, but most of the time all you do on bigfooty is **** stir and pick fights for the hell of it.

Every club will last until the 5 year TV deal is up in 2007, After that the AFL will stop with the million dollar hand outs and generally make things a little bit more difficult.

Its up to these clubs (plus a few more) to be able to survive on their own by the end of the 5 years. Otherwise ...

The amount of financial gurus, football administrators, North Melbourne presidents and AFL Chief Execs posting on Bigfooty never ceases to amaze me.

Either we have all these people in our presence, or you all read sh1tty little (and big) news papers, and love making predictions on the viability of 140yo football clubs.

I don't know about the Kangaroos but do you think running losses of over $3 million in the last 3 years is sustainable?

You mean he isn't one now?

I am torn.

His general board stuff is simply a sh1t stir, and I take none of it remotely seriously. I know what he is doing (not hard really), and it even gives me a laugh.

This sh1t is ill-informed garbage.

Not true. If a club is insolvent the directors are personally liable for debts incurred. They cannot go on. They AFL would then have to gurantee debts and trading. The TV agreement will not mean they will do that as a matter of course. IMO if need be, the broadcast agreement will be renegotiated and some extras will be given to the broadcasters.

The Bulldogs are a fair chance to go under in the next three years looking at their wretched financial situation. By how much can they increase their membership levels by? And let's not forget that this year's financial situation was helped significantly by their one-off 'Team of the Century' function.

The Bulldogs won't be able to save themselves through a massive grass-roots tin rattle as they did in 1989. Football clubs have become big business and hence will have to be saved by big business. Sadly, the passion and inspiration of the Irene Chatfield's of this world aren't able to fight back against the will of the dictates of the free-market capitalist system.

Perhaps David Smorgon could dip into his significant financial reserves and give the club some badly needed financial assistance. But I guess he'll take the much easier option of blaming their working-class supporters who can't afford to buy memebership tickes and give other financial assistance to the club.

Let's face it.

I hate the fact as much as anyone, but the AFL is aiming at the middle classes and upwards. They will be the only ones able to purhase memberships over even just buy general admission to the games. Naturally the working classes are still welcome to follow the game, but TV will be their only option.

Sadly there aint a whole lot of spare cash floating around the Western suburbs so the AFL has little interest in ensuring a club's survival out there. Of course they won't admit that, but that is the case.
