Who will miss Rd 1?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Ling in. Kelly out. Harley out.

Ottens should be in, as should King and Riccardi.

Kingsley maybe in.

S Johnson, I don't think even he would know.

Harley & Kelly will certainly miss with Kingsley the other doubtful stater. He'll probably have to pass a fitness test later in the week.

Ricco, King, Johnson & Otto are pretty much certainties and if Frankston VFL had been able to arrange themselves (they couldn't organise a praccy match in time against the Cats), all 4 would've played a half or so on the weekend.

Kelly and Harley out is about the only certainty.

Ling seems to be fine going on training reports and Ricco played two half games in the VFL over two weeks so he should be ok for his role off the bench. The others have only played the one quarter/half so would be pretty suss still I think.

Will any of them play?

Harley - Definetly won't play this week. Next time we see him will be Round 4 at least.
Riccardi - He's ready (ie. he's not injured).
Kingsley - Maybe.
S. Johnson - No idea. He's ankle is alright but wheher they will give him a run in the VFL or not remains to be seen.
King - He'll play, despite being heavily underdone.
Ling - He'll play.
Ottens - Should play.
Kelly - Out until Round 3 at least.

One of Ottens and King must play.

I have a feeling King and Blake will play and Ottens will play in the VFL side before returning round 2 if he makes it through. I hope to be proven wrong though

With Kingsley unlikely to take the field, i would be very suprised if Otto missed.

A half fit Ottens standing in the goal square is a better option that anything else we have to offer.

Otto will play!

I would have thought S Johnson would be highly unlikely. Rather I think they'll give him a quarter or a half in the twos - this seems to be the mantra now being followed.

I think it's horses for courses Jim Boy. VFL football has never done Dog any good in the past and I don't see why it would do him any good this week. The injury is such that it actually requires less gametime where possible. I saw him in the VFL a couple of weeks ago and on that basis I'd play him.

I would certainly hope they wouldn't play Otto if he is only half fit!!! I'd hate to see him get injured again because they rush him back. I think Geelong have learnt not to rush our big blokes back before they are ready.
I'd love Otto to play but he has to be 100% fit for me to be happy. hahaha :)

He has been in cotton wool since Round 19 last year. If he is not ready by now, then how long do we wait? Round 1 next year? This guy is the difference for the club.

I was not suggesting playing a half fit Ottens. was suggesting that a Ottens at half capacity is more talented in contested situations than any other foward on our list with maybe NAth the exception.

I can't believe it's been so long for Ottens to get better! Poor guy! The club doesn't really have much of a choice of how long to wait before Otto is ready coz if they play him when his not ready his more likely to get injured again and then have ages out again! Gosh, it sucks so much when players are injured! I'm still not fully convinced about Otto... I wouldn't say he is the difference for the club but he certainly helps.

Watch out u might get hammered for saying big statements like that! lol What about our 9 goal superstar Kingsley???

Wojcinski has played two VFl games I think.
Could miss thought since its been a year since he played AFL.

Yep, after a year on the sidelines Woj needs to regain touch and win back his spot with good form in the magoos.

Cats to take on Lions
28 March 2006 Herald Sun
Michael Stevens

GEELONG could have big guns Steven King and Brad Ottens back for Saturday's season opener against the Brisbane Lions at Skilled Stadium.

And full-forward Ken Kingsley and key playmaker Cameron Ling could also play.

King and Ottens have had limited game time during the pre-season, but have stepped up their training in the past fortnight.

King, who had achilles surgery in the off-season, played a half in the VFL on the weekend of the NAB final (March 18).

"He did some game sets (drills) on Friday and there is no question mark on his fitness," Steven Hocking, the club's spokesman on injuries, said last night.

Ottens, who ripped his groin tendon off the bone in Round 20 last year, also did game drills on Friday and will be available, according to Hocking.

Kingsley, who injured his hamstring against the Kangaroos in the second round of the NAB Cup on March 4, will be tested later this week.

Ling, who injured his knee in the Cats' pre-season premiership win, was running last Friday and also trained yesterday.

"I can't see why he wouldn't play," Hocking said.

The only Cats definitely ruled out for Saturday are midfielder James Kelly and defender Tom Harley.

Kelly, nursing a fractured scapula, is scheduled to resume in Round 3, while Harley, recovering from patella tendon knee surgery, will return through the VFL about Round 4 or 5.

Obviously something fishy going on with Ottens. This morning on ABC radio they said that King would play but Ottens would miss.

I was suggesting contested situations. Super Kent is great when he has an area to lead into, but is fragile when found in a 'one on one' situation.

With saying that, his Round 1 effort against the Blue Boys at the Dome in the NAB was Wayne Careylike... :D

A different point of view....

King's fit but Cats wait on Ottens
By Greg Denham
March 28, 2006

GEELONG appears likely to start the new season without quality ruckman-forward Brad Ottens, but captain Steven King is certain to resume against Brisbane at Skilled Stadium on Saturday.

Neither has played a senior pre-season game this year.

Ottens has not played since round 20 last year and has had surgery in a bid to prevent another bout of osteitis pubis. King has had a steady build-up since achilles surgery.

Geelong high performance manager Steven Hocking last night said King was "a fraction more advanced" than his ruck partner, but declared Ottens was available to play.

The 26-year-old former Richmond ruckman may kick off his second year with the Cats in Saturday's warm-up game in the VFL.

However, Ottens' chances of playing against the Lions would improve should full-forward Kent Kingsley fail a fitness test tomorrow at training.

Kingsley tore his right hamstring a week after booting nine goals against Carlton in the first round of the NAB Cup and faces the crucial test tomorrow, almost a month after the initial damage.

"At the moment, Kingsley's chances are up in the air," Hocking said. "We'll know more on Wednesday."

The pre-season premier will be down on its best 22 as Steve Johnson (ankle) and David Wojcinski (knee) will start in the VFL.

James Kelly (shoulder) is not expected to be available until late next month, and Tom Harley (knee/hip) has been scheduled in for a return sometime in May.
Peter Riccardi has had a limited pre-season and he, too, will be assessed tomorrow after just half a VFL practice game this year.

Cameron Ling has already been given the all-clear to resume after bruising his knee in the night grand final against Adelaide.

Nathan Ablett, who twisted his ankle and withdrew from Geelong's pre-season premiership match, trained well yesterday and is also available
