Melbourne - but live in WA - Bombers

Bombers
Straight From the AFL to You

Carlton had 49 more disposals than the Bulldogs, 22 more marks, 5 more effective tackles and 14 more inside 50s. With those sorts of stats, a team would expect to win, but the Blues could only score 17 times from their 347 disposals. Carlton played pass-the-parcel with 12 forward-50 handballs in the second quarter alone (the AFL avg is 13 per match). For all this, the Blues could only score 2 goals from general play for the whole match.

Carlton fans have attempted to blame the umpires for their loss, pointing at the 26-9 free kick count. Matthew Lappin was the main offender, giving away a season record 7.

Essendon had 56 more disposals than the Hawks, 9 more marks, 24 more inside 50s and 12 more rebound 50s. The key to Essendon's dominance began in the centre where they won the centre bounce hitouts 24 to 14 and had 47 more disposals in the midfield. 11 goals came from general play, 11 from marks.

Blake Caracella and Mark Mercuri were exceptional targets up forward for the Bombers. Caracella had an astonishing 100% effectiveness in disposal, picking up 8 effective kicks and 18 effective handballs. Mercuri had 15 kicks and 5 handballs and brought the ball inside 50m 7 times. These two kicked 7 goals between them.

Head to head: Carlton 110 Essendon 97 Drawn 3

Last 10 years: Carlton 10 Essendon 12 Drawn 1

The finals will be almost an anti-climax after the buildup which has surrounded this match - the most hy! ped home and away game for years. But with good reason - it is seen as a clear grand final preview with unbeaten Essendon tackling Carlton, whose run of 13 wins came to an end only last weekend with a narrow loss to the Western Bulldogs. There is no real reason to think the Bombers' streak won't continue. Bradley is back to add more pace but the Blues are without form ruckman Matthew Allan. Central to the main game will be the potential duel between Essendon skipper James Hird and fellow multi-millionaire Anthony Koutoufides, the hottest player in the league at the moment.

Key: Given that Barnes should win the ruck duels, Carlton's midfield will have to be at its best otherwise the Bombers will give their all-star forward line too much supply for the Blues defence to cope. Even if they manage to stop Essendon's glamor spearhead Matthew Lloyd there is still the likes of Mark Mercuri, Steve Alessio, Gary Moorcroft and Scott Lucas.

Quite looking forward to it but, when you think about it, this is probably the most meaningless match this year. The result can't alter anything, if Carlton win it'll be a feather in their cap but that's all, neither coaching panel will want to show too much and it'll probably rain plus I think Essendon by AT LEAST 10 goals! Hmmmm maybe there's a good movie on SBS!

Alessio is the key for the Bombers tonight.

I don't think Carlton have a credible match-up for him, and also they will be fixated on stopping Lloyd, Lucas and Caracella.

Alessio will be the spare tall for the Bombers across the CHF line and will dominate accordingly.

Agree with shinboner..bombers by about five goals..the result means nothing, finals are a new season.Barnes and Alessio will probably
overpower Porter but remember Allan is out and when he is back Carlton are going to be more than a match for Essendon in the ruck and have the option of playing Allan up forward where he is dangerous.Shinboner makes a good point about playing the ball and not the man..Brown can hardly be match fit and is only in the team to thump guys like Misiti etc who dont like the rough stuff..the Kangas try the same tactics against Essendon every match and only end up giving away stupid free kicks and losing the game..

Cant believe in the praise of Alessio's influence from Barney & Bloodstained Angel.

He has played one good game in living memory! Whenever I look up Essendons stats I know where to find him - right down the bottom - not far below Solomon, another overated player (but miles better than Alessio and at least he is young).

Alessio will have no impact (as usual) and Essendon will still win. They can easily carry this big gimp right through until the premiership. Sam Newman got it right, for once, when he said 'no good having the body of tarzan if you play like Jane'.

On second thoughts I was a bit harsh on Solomon its just that if I ever hear KB, Drew or Sandy (how the last 2 continue to get a gig on TV amazes me) mention he has to be tough because he's from Broken Hill (or some other variation of the same theme) I'll be sick.

The blockbuster will be won by Adelaide by 2-3 goals.

Oh hang on there is another big game on this weekend isn't there.

I forgot.

Richmond in a canter.

What? Essendon v carlton. Are they playing? Gee thats been kept quiet.

the big question is which bombers player will be injured by either Fraser Brown, Aaron Hammill or another of Carltons all elbowing, all tripping thugs.

And then the question will be why said Carlton player gets off at the tibunal for such a deliberate action.

Carlton will praying for rain like Pommy cricketers, but if the weather is ok- i reckon Bombers by about 30-40 pts after they slack off at about a 50-60 point lead.

Also: Silvagni to scrag Lloyd all night without umps noticing.

A.

Hoping for an absolute belter - the league as a whole needs it!!

Lots of broken arms and legs along the way would be a bonus!!
