Right on, don, says king kong.

I cleaned out the refrigerator with an old toothbrush and some bicarbonate of soda this afternoon.

It was as exciting as watching the norff match.

In fact, I think it was even more exciting!

I think you'll find the problem with the North match, and most ordinary games, is that Port Adelaide were involved. Having Port as one of the two teams is a great way to ruin a footy game.

You watch, In the Ess vs North match this week ,north will claim half the crowd go for them (they only turn up for big matches). Pathetic and sad. And also I wouldn't have thought Port would have that many supporters in Sydney. Against Fremantle it was Fremantles fault, Mothers day they were all with mum. Sydney who knows??

Heard on the radio this morning a North official say that the club will LOSE between $50,000 - $60,000 on that match. Also rumour has it that of the official attendance of a paltry 6900 people, about 4000 tickets were giveaways. Apart from that match being a total bore, this must be a huge embarrassment.

I read this morning, that the official attendance for the pre match carnival was 2500 people.Assuming that they stayed that constitutes half the game crowd. Furthermore, 500 tickets were given away to school children as an incentive to go. Thats a fair chunk of 6,593 people. Norwood Port get that many at a local SANFL game!

Now now Kiddies, that's not very nice. Don't forget about the fact that Sydney held the largest march in the history of Aust. on Sunday approx. 500 thousand walked across the Coat Hanger for six hrs. Up yours LITTLE Johny.

Musn't have been much fun for the Roo Boys, playing in the icy weather without a crowd to warm them up, you'd think they'd lost the way they sang the club song. They'll be pleased to back home on Sunday to play the Bombers, then again maybe not.

BOMBER BLITZ IN 2000!

Yes the excuses have come flying. Mayeb Norff should relocate to being the Victorian side in the Sanfl seeing as they draw appropriate crowds for that comp.

Excuses "flying" Don? The only excuse I've read here is from an Essendon supporter! I agree with SOME things said on this thread and I'll just cop the rest on the chin.

well---I just heard excuses "flying" about on the news tonight. norff are blaming port for being an insipid drawcard (bit of a case of the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it?). they should look a little closer to home before calling other teams insipid.

and why do sydney fans get accused of being fickle for not falling over themselves to go and watch two teams who they are not interested in play (one being a mortal enemy of all good swans fans).

and what about norff's own melbourne members? norff could not even get all of its members to the mcg for the fremantle game in melbourne and sydneysiders are meant to fall over themselves in gratitude at the opportunity to do so.

and sydney siders are called fickle! HA!

True to form Greg Miller blamed Western Bulldogs for playing in Sydney, Collingwood and Melbourne.

He also blamed the Sorry day march.

Bu twhy stop there we could blame the umpire in the Geelong vs Adelaide final in 97, surely HE effected the crowd.

There were not alot of people there on Sunday to see north play. It is interesting though how many individuals will take the time out of the their day to exercise their sarcasm and wit and the expense of the north melbourne club. As far as I am concerned it is sticks and stones. Gee I might start bagging all the smaller States in Australia because they are reliant on Victoria and New South Wales for their survival.

You are right cc, mind you, if sticks and stones had been counted you would have had 7,000 there !! It is just that Norrfs popularity is the exact opposite to thier few fans constant bragging. (see premiers 2000 team post)

The thing that strikes me about the Kangaroos sydney experiment is that not only are the crowds low in sydney, the Kangaroos fans in melbourne are not happy and not attending games as much as a few years ago.

Juts to add to the bad news for the Roos ...

I was one of the 7000 poor souls who attended the SCG on Sunday and came away with the following observations :

- The crowd included 2500 school kids who attendied a clinic before the game.

- Around 500 parents attended with their children, also admitted for free.

- The school children attended the clinic in large numbers because Tony Lockett took the session.

- Around half (yes, half) of the crowd appeared to be barracking for Port.

- I thought it was actually quite a good game, with Port being very competitive for most of the duration. Wayne Carey was of course the difference between the two teams.

Why the small crowd ?

Excuses, excuses, including the low profile opponent, the fact that it was bloody freezing, the Walk for Reconciliation clsed the Harbour Bridge all day, the early 12.40 start... on and on it goes, but there is no hiding the fact that it was a VERY dissapointing crowd, made even more so by the fact that alot of people showed up to see Tony Lockett, and not the Roos.

When you take into consideration Sydney got walloped in Adelaide, Brisbane dropped a game they were expected to win at home, ditto for West Coast and Fremantle were an uncompetitive rabble once again and what you have is undoubtedly the blackest day for Non-Victorian footy since the AFL started.

Where to from here ?

You might not like Greg Miller, and his increasingly shrill outbursts are starting to annoy alot of people, but I had to admire the guts and determination showed by the Kangaroos when they defiantly announced that they want to play more games in Sydney next year, and a game in Canberra too.

Good on you Roos - keep at it. It will take years of hard work (and financial assistance) to make the venture work but if the 18 year experience of the Swans is anything to go by then you must be in it for the long haul for it pay off.

If the Kangaroos are really serious about this Sydney thing then they are just going have to wear disasters like last Sunday on the chin, because there are plenty more where that came from !

And guess why Norrf shouldn't keep trying . The AFL are giving them $950,000 to underwrite this crap!! About time all clubs should keep thier own profits and let the minnows go. Let all stand on thier own merits.

Why was the sydney thing so hard compared to the 'instant' success of the melbourne storm. What are the factors ? dit they allow melbourne to recruit 11 'tony locketts' right from the start ?

I know they were ruthless in putting down the rabbitohs

The Swans had poor crowds when they first went to Sydney and we will not hold it against Ron Joseph and his North Melbourne background for giving the poor old swannies a helping hand. How soon we forget our history and our facts.

Blood Stained Angel,

It would be pretty interesting if the AFL really punished teams that have difficulty with intergrity and honesty when it comes to the draft. As for teams standing up on their own, this would have meant that Collingwood would have been treated the same as the Footscray when they were broke back in the 1980's.

The AFL had a moratorium regarding the draft early ninties and Ess and Melb were stupid enough not to take advantage of it. The reporting at that time said MOST clubs took advantage. Who knows which clubs?? so don't say my club is all hunky dory you just don't know. How much longer do clubs in financial difficulty keep getting bailed out by the profitable clubs. I know it's harsh but it has to stop sometime. The less sucessful clubs can sit on their hands and wait for the emotional blackmail etc to start. North have been in long enough to get crowds?? If they can't get them with premierships and KING Bloody Carey they NEVER will.

Let the stronger ones remain ?

There are only 4 clubs who haven't had some kind of financial trouble in the last ten years (I don't count freo and port as they need a chance to prove themselves,

You'd be left with a league of four. that would make for great fixturing:

Round 1
Ess v Carl, WCE V Adel

Round 2
Adel v Ess, Carl v WCE

Round 3
WCE v Ess, Carl v Adel

and so on etc.

We've only got 16 teams, only 13 with history. lets keep what we've got !

pess I agree but at the moment it is easy for the other clubs to sit back and wait for the money. Correct me if I am wrong but at the end of the year all the monies (apart from membership money) is pooled and distributed equally? So the lazy clubs can sit back and let the rest do all the hardwork. I don't give a shit if you hate these clubs but Ess, Carl etc promote their clubs non stop!! They get the crowds and the rest profit? Why should Ess suffer when they can get 40,000 to watch them play the bottom side when North or Haw etc cant? How come their supporters see them good or bad when some clubs can't get hardley anyone. Even the lions in their bad years have increased their crowds to 30,000 avg in BRISBANE a thugby League stronghold because they promoter their club anyway they can schools, shopping centre,s etc. How much longer can the strong support the weak. When will North etc get decent crowds. No crowds no monet but HEY!! carl, Ess etc are making enough for all of us.
