Who'll qualify for the Super Six, and inturn the semis and the final?

My predictions:

Pool A
Australia
England
Zimbabwe

Im tipping Pakistan to be the shock omission from the Super 6. England will reipt the benefits of just playing the best side in the world, and Zimbabwe to repeat their 99 effort after wins against the 2 dud sides, and possible forfeits for their home matches.

Pool B
South Africa
New Zealand
Sri Lanka

SA and NZ to easily advance, and Sri Lanka to just scrape in on net run rate over the Windies.

From hear I think the Semis will be:

Australia vs New Zealand
South Africa vs England

And Australia to beat SA in the final.

Whats everyone else think?

Dont know how England will be ranked No2 when it looks like they will forfiet to Zimbabwe yet you think Zimbabwe will get through. Pakistan are erratic but they will make the Super6 (and will beat Australia on Tuesday)
West Indies will show Sri Lanka up for the one dimensial turning dustbowl side that they are

GROUP A

Pakistan (4pts)
Australia (2pts)
India (0pts)

GROUP B
South Africa (2pts)
New Zealand (2pts)
West Indies (2pts)

S/F

Aus (1) V WI (4)
Pak (2) V SAF (3)

Final

Aus V SAF

Winner - SAF

I have come up with this theory by basically tipping the winner in every match

If it is an Aus vs SA final, I doubt Australia would lose. But if Aus get to the final and have to face NZ, than I think New Zealand might win the cup.

My hot tip for the Super Six - Kenya. Have a guaranteed win against NZ, will beat Bangladesh and Canada, and if they can jag a win against one of the other 3 they are there.

Probably won't happen, but the TAB has them at 150/1 to make the semis. Could be worth 10 bucks.

I'd be very surprised if England made it to the Super 6 - they said a couple of years ago they wanted to build a 'nucleus' of players for the WC but this has failed to eventuate, and they have more or less thrown a squad together.

Also, their one-day record has been shoddy over the last couple of years. Barring an away series win against Zimbabwe, they haven't won any type of one-day series since 2000.

The Super Six is slightly different to last time. Teams will also carry points from games against non-qualifiers forward:

21.9.2 Super Six Matches

The six teams that qualify for the Super Six phase carry forward the points that they have gained in the Group Matches as follows:
• Win v other qualifiers - 4 points each (Tie or no result - 2 points each)

• Win v non-qualifiers - 1 point each (Tie or no result - ½ point each)

The points carried forward by each team are added to those they gain in the Super Six Matches, to form the Super Six league table.

So it's no longer a "round robin".

Pretty much how I see it going. A dark horse for 'Pool A' could be Zimbabwe, especially if they get two wins (v Eng & Aus) from forfeits.

Kenya could still miss out on the Super Six stage even if they beat Bangladesh, giving them 4 wins.

Kenya - 4 wins??

Sri Lanka - 3 wins, play South Africa and West Indies
South Africa - 2 wins, play Sri Lanka and Canada
New Zealand - 2 wins, play Bangladesh and Canada

West Indies 2 & 1/2 wins, must win their last 2 games against Kenya and Sri lanka to make it.

New Zealand should get to 4 wins from this position.

South Africa must win their last 2 matches to make it.

It could come down to net run rate as to who makes it.

as has been mentioned, your point allocations are incorrect. australia, for example, should qualify for the super sixers with 16 points, etc. kenya could well qualify 3rd in their group but take through more points than the teams above them.

That's right.

Teams carry forward...

4 points against the other 2 teams who make Super Six from the group.
1 point against the other 4 teams from the group.

4 x 2 = 8
1 x 4 = 4
Maximum Points = 12.

sorry my mistake. yes, 12 points max as SC says above.

i knew what i meant to say, no really ... :)

Sri Lanka's last 2 games against West Indies and South Africa will have a huge bearing on all 3 sides chances of making the Super Six stage as well as the West Indies vs Kenya match.

Good call at the start of the tournament. It looks like being a logjam in that Group for Super Sixes spots.

Me and a mate at work both have $10 to win $1500. It was originally done as a joke, and to be honest, I can't really see them pulling off at least another win to make the semis, but I was jumping around the room the other day watching them against Chucky's boys!

If it comes off, that would surely qualify us as being legendary gamblers. :)

They could conceivably go through with 11 points if they beat the West Indies. They could make the semis with just one win at the Super Six stage. Maybe they could upset a Pakistan, England or Zimbabwe.

We've got it all worked out. As long as they beat Bangladesh and New Zealand beat Canada, all we need is Sri Lanka to win their last 2 games and Kenya not only go through, but go through with 10 points, meaning they could even qualify without even winning a game in the super 6 stage.

Would make a bit of a farce of the World Cup points system, but if I end up with $1500 in my hot little hand, do you think I would give a fat rats clacker? :D

Ahhh....found it at last - no wonder Rob hasn't posted today - he is off down the pub getting plastered!!

Well done mate, you can talk about that win for years!

Legend.

Thank you all, I spent last night at the Mustang Bar in Northbridge with my mate who had $5 on it biting our nails for about 5 hours. And I promised about 20 people at work free drinks on Friday if they got up.

And if you see a couple of guys wandering around Northbridge tomorrow night with a whole pile of groupies following them around, it's because they're all getting free drinks. :)

I don't get to cash it in until the super sixes are over, but hopefully the TAB will let me keep my ticket after that, it's getting framed. :D

bump

i just noticed that according to the ICC's ODI rankings (they were ranked a couple years, and these were used for grouping the teams in Pool A and Pool B), the teams that qualified for the Super Six were ranked:

1 , 3 , 5 , 7 , 9 and 11

oh well, it interested me for a second.
