Who's likely to be our best small forward?

I know around the half way mark of the 2016 season we were ranked first for time inside the forward 50. I only see this trend going up with all the lively and quick small forward options we've added this trade and draft period.

Super excited by what Pickett, LeBois, SPS, and Polson can deliver next year and beyond.

The game has moved away from specialist small forwards who can't spend time further up the ground. We certainly have plenty of options now which is in stark contrast to the last few years where the cupboard has been bare.

For mine Wright gets the benefit of the doubt here after his good form last year. I am hopeful he can shake the inconsistency which has plagued his career to date and build on a very solid debut season for us.

Long-term I am hopeful that a change of scenery and a clean bill of health brings out the best in Pickett. Hugely talented young footballer who is clever around goals but also has the game to impact the contest on a flank or wing.

I am quite excited with our forward setup this year. We all know about our 2015 influx of tall forwards, which I expect will all take a big leap in output . Charlie, McKay and SOS could easily show massive improvement.
But to go with these talls , I see some excitement amongst our smalls and their ability to exert forward pressure and hopefully lock the ball in our F50 for much longer this year. I see three new players that could excel in this SPS, Pickett and LeBois. All super quick , agile and hopefully can become great tacklers

1 Pickett http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...r/news-story/5fced45ce8c9e42c66e188ea6b124911

“Jarrod Pickett up the other end is a very small livewire, knows how to find the goals and his tackling pretty is outstanding and speed is very elite."

2 SPS http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...t/news-story/21c21660ffd3134d7a27896b5494332e

"Sam Petrevski-Seton has speed, polish and, just like Rioli, a tough tackling streak."

3. LeBois- very evasive himself, and fast. He will need to learn the defensive game this year but with his speed and tenacity he could be a real weapon.

Now consider that we already have sumner and wright and we have the makings of a nice defensive but also highly skilled goal kicking unit

Also very excited with our potential forward set-up(s) this year! Pity that afl.com.au has our forward line 18th on the list!

I would think it is fair enough. I've not seen the article but our forward line is not created yet. We added a de-listed free agent to be our best goal kicker in 2016 and had a few debuts of 18 year olds. It is a thing in progress. Every other forward line in AFL is more set up from scratch. Brisbane is only forward that is still in early stages of setting up. Schache has at least made debut for Lions. McKay yet to debut. They have others with 20 to 30 games experience under their belt. We have Jack Silvagni and Charlie Curnow not even to their 10th game yet. Our forward line potential maybe has great upside and I believe it will deliver in 3 or 4 years time but right now , I would not be expecting outsiders to think we would be better placed for 2017 than other forward lines in AFL.
If AFL site is ranking it saying 18th, I certainly not shocked by that.

I'm hoping lebois steps up.

I'm also hoping sumner moves to the wing and plays a more midfield role, not small forward.

The mention of Pickett as a small forward surprises me a little because l thought he was more of a winger. In his junior footy thought he mainly played as a wingman or running half back like johanneson.

Will be interesting to see where Carlton play Pickett. Maybe because of injury and limited preseason he will play like sumner did last year. As a smaller forward because of lack of fitness.

Le Bois is a quality small forward and can do the mercurial. Just give him a few seasons to settle down and build his fitness level, very skillful footballer.
Pickett can do the amazing too, but in speciality small forward role, it's Le Bois.
Silvagni has loaded us with young talent, have'nt experienced this type of exuberance and excitiment for a vey very long time.
Weitering , Marchbank, Mackay, SPS, Pickett, Le Bois , Fisher, Jack Silvagni, Charlie Curnow, and others , it's so amazing one not sure whom to focus on.
Go Bagges

Season 2017, will be the season that sees the CFC establish the foundation for a forward line will have multiple players with the ability to score.
The likes of McKay, Silvagni and C.Curnow should cement themselves a position.
Palmer, Smedts and Kerridge have the ability to kick goals off half forward and Wright hopefully backs up his first season in the navy blue.
In terms of small farwards, we have no shortage of candidates such as Sumner, Pickett, SPS, Fisher and LeBois who should get the opportunity this season to show what they can produce.
Even though the opinion of some posters is that, gone is the traditional small forward role, I still believe the role is specialised and it takes a special type of player who can play this role and play it well.
Players like Pickett, SPS, Fisher, Lebois and Sumner have the ability to play this role.
It requires a player with speed, very good agility, evasiveness, good awareness, one touch, good tackler, good above head and off the ground, footy smarts, kick both sides, a good tank, and have that special x-factor.
I think in due course the forward line will be just as solid as the backline and with goal scoring mids the CFC will cause headaches for other sides.
For now, Sumner gets the nod but competition for this role makes it interesting.

I'm not sure how Galluci's tracking with his shoulder, but you can throw him into the small fwd mix as well.

Don't overlook Armfield in this mix. In my view over the last few seasons he has been a lock in the side when fit and I think a position on a forward flank is his to lose. We all look to the new kids and the younger returning guys to take the step up and for the veterans to slow up but don't just assume either is going necessarily to happen and unless one does then Dangles holds the spot IMO.

Don't forget Galluci....he showed promise last year before being injured

Really excited we have a batch of small forwards to do the pressure acts and crumb to, and work with, Harry, Levi, Jack and Charlie.

Want Pickett to come on and take the mantle of best small forward.

Sumner has pace, see how he goes with a full pre-season.

Excited by Le Bois, Aaron and Alwyn's nephew.

Polson can play.

Lamb thereabouts.

See if Galluci can rise above it from the rookie list.

Fisher I see as a genuine midfielder.

Pressure on Wright to better his Season 2016 as our leading goal-kicker.

Think our forward line could trouble opposition teams far more in Season 2017 than last year.

I wrote a post earlier hoping lebois would step up and that l hoped Pickett and sumner would play more footy through the midfield. I had completely forgotten about Fisher until l read some other posts.

I had automatically thought of Fisher as a midfielder but in his early years he could play a small forward role. He is such a smart little footballer who is always involved and has good decision making. Wouldn't surprise me that if he shows a bit early on he will get some games as a forward to introduce him to afl footy without the physical pressure of being a midfielder.

I remain worried about Fisher's top speed. First step is OK, and he's agile and tough, but he's also 65 kgs on a good day and that lack of leg drive (amongst other potential core strength issues) worries me in terms of his ability to avoid or deal with an oncoming tackler.

If he was slow with some bulk, fine, but he lacks both and seems to have some traits that suggest he'll not put on much weight through his career. Here's hoping he's just been lacklustre with his conditioning as a junior and there's plenty more to be found.

Reminds me of Kade Simpson in this regard. Reckon he turned out ok.

Kade was a much more explosive player right out of the box. I've no issue with Fisher's ability to read the game or use the footy, but I have a problem with his pace, especially given his size.

Kade used to (and still does) glide over the turf, this kid does not. There is seemingly no evidence of him showing anything more than average foot speed for an U18/state player, which is worrying.

I'm sure people will pop up to dispute this, but if they can point me to something conclusive, I'll shut up about it.

Pickett long lay off, seems very quick and strong....look out !
Sumner should bring A grade game this year.no excuses.
Smedts should be able to contribute from a forward flank.
LeBoish a lot of work to be Afl standard still very young.plenty of kids still very young.northern- if these kids are as good as being said northern should have a much better year and that will also be an indicator for the senior team.
Buckley probably will be mainly playing for northern
Galluci slow start after injured shoulder northern
Lamb should be able to contribute
Armfield experienced should play well
Wright probably our best small forward this year as well.....pretty good..

hopefully we can get 2 or 3 guys contributing at the level of Mathew Wright and then add some mobile talls and we have a plan.

Gee some people are ridiculously critical of young kids. If we look hard enough we can allies find something wrong.

Kid looks very good to me and will get a lot better

I reckon people are way too bullish on him is all. He's got a lot of conditioning work to do.

Jimmae l was hoping that you booked in for some therapy after Carlton took Fisher at 25. By the sounds of it you didn't.

I think your being a bit rigid in your assessment of Fisher. I don't think pace will make or break Fisher and l get the impression that is one of your major problems with him. That he needs to be very quick because of his size.

He has plenty to prove and there are no guarantees but he is more advanced than most 18 year olds as he showed in the champs.

I think you do have legitimate concerns but from my perspective you aren't giving Fisher enough credit for his strengths. I feel like you are looking at discrete components of his makeup, for example Height weight speed, and writing him off. The total package l see is similar to Daniels and Gresham. Smart rounded footballers who are relatively short. No individual characteristic standing out.

Anyway, not sure l've accurately represented your thoughts but that's the impression lm left with.
