Why are Hawthorn hogging the 3:20pm slot?

Hawks also hogging the 11.50am Channel 7 VFL slot with four of the first seven games telecast.
14.5k was a poor crowd but easy to see why. With no trains from the east and car parking capacity limited, much easier to stay home for a FTA double header. Only 2 of our 12 reserved seat holders went. Some missed because of the difficulty of getting there, some because of Mother’s Day lunch and others happy just to watch on TV. 3.20. We are fickle. But so what? Why would supporters who have been to 30+ finals including 10 GFs be so excited about this match? When you follow Hawthorn home and away games are not that important. It was a good win but very forgettable match. One poor crowd will have little impact on the club’s fortunes. blah blah blah who cares?

With all the planned rail works in metropolitan Melbourne it will be interesting to se
Another significant factor was no trains on Belgrave/Lilydale/Alamein/Glen Waverley lines which is all Hawks heartland.
I think this is the key issue. The time slot is fine. If trains aren’t running though that’s an extra 30 mins or more travel each way. In such instances with live TV there’s no incentive to go

Ah, yes.... Against Port Adelaide.... Arctic conditions in torrential rain, in a ground which was missing 1/4 of its stands due to a redevelopment!! We also only had 40k members at that stage, so was still almost 33% of our membership numbers.

Makes the excuses from powerhouse Hawthorn seem fairly trivial!

Missing qtr of stand is irrelevant when you don’t fill the rest of the ground. Weather conditions always crap at your small country town again irrelevant.

As for our crowd Sunday Hawks are the family club so small crowd on mother’s day not that surprising.

Ha.... The family club.... The same family club that is loading up on pokies and hides players depression so they can trade them and transfer the issue to another club?

Different league to the $25m and counting at the family club. We've stopped at ground gambling advertising on the scoreboard and boundary lines, and are selling our pokies in the next financial year.
Yes thats good, I hope we do the same at Richmond in the near future but as it is many clubs are still taking the profits from pokies, Geelong are number 6 but agreed no where near the take that Hawthorn and Carlton are pulling in.

If you put Geelong at the MCG at 3.20pm against GWS would they be able to draw more then 14,000? I think not.

Geelong got 44,000 for an Elimination Final in 2012 against Fremantle at the MCG.

Hawthorn got 72,000 against Sydney in 2014 in a home and away game!

This.

Geelong is responsible for most, if not all, the medicore MCG finals crowds too.

When Hawthorn was drawing 70,000 plus to Semi Finals and Preliminary Finals against Adelaide (twice) and Port Adelaide, the Cats couldnt even clear 55,000 to a Semi Final against Port Adelaide

In Geelong, in our home city, at our home ground, I would guarantee we would beat it!! Why make false equivalences?

Also.... Cherry picking games from 7 years ago... Haha hahaha

Geelong is a small, boutique club.

This is a point made repeatedly by your CEO

That second article is pretty categorical isnt it? Geelong can't afford to bottom out, what sort of minnow would say that. Especially a minnow that has been generously given a stadium by the Victorian tax payers and an NDIS facility to offset the Ford factory closure

But congrats on finally crack'ing 50,000 members. That as the ice'ing on the cake.

So why argue for our home games and home finals to be played at the MCG?

Whose arguing?

Geelong can’t even fill their tinpot stadium for derbies against Victorian clubs

Given they can’t afford to bottom out (Brian Cook’s words in 2018) they are basically to the 2010’s what North Melbourne was to the 2000’s
95% of KP is sold before Christmas the year before in reserved seat packages. The club already has the money. Your club should consider selling games to KP or PP if they're going to continue to draw under 15k

Well on that argument Hawthorn has more than 80,000 members and has the 3rd largest membership reserve amongst the Victorian clubs (more than 25,000 MCG reserve seat holders including all of M, N, P and 30% of Q level seating in the Southern, Olympic Stands).

They also have 3 N level bays in the Ponsford Stand for non Collingwood home games.

So yeah on that argument it really doesn’t matter if 14,000 (GWS), 40,000, 50,000 (WC in 2012) or even 73,000 (Sydney in 2014) rock up on ticket sales alone

Where the draw and schedule matter is for corporate hospitality which is decimated by Mothers Day games against GWS

Perhaps Geelong would be best served making themselves financially solvent enough to withstand a bottom 8 finish lol

Why must the AFL fixture be so poorly thought out that we have the same teams always in the same slots?

Are we really happy having Hawthorn feature so prominently so early on in the season?

Sunday March 31: Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs, MCG (3.20pm)
Sunday April 7: Hawthorn v North Melbourne, MCG (3.20pm)
Sunday April 14: St Kilda v Hawthorn, Marvel Stadium (3.20pm)
Monday April 22: Hawthorn v Geelong Cats, MCG (3.20pm)
Sunday April 28: Hawthorn v Carlton, UTAS Stadium — Launceston (3.20pm)
Sunday May 12: Hawthorn v GWS Giants, MCG (3.20pm)
Sunday May 19: Richmond v Hawthorn, MCG (3.20pm)

The AFL's lack of creativity is becoming increasingly frustrating!
Think you've got too much time on your hands

Makes no difference what time they play, they are just middle of the road ordinary.

The scoreline is really flattering them.
