Opinion Why are interstate clubs not drafting Victorians in the first round in 2020?

The Lions just draft talent they’re last 2 first drafted players have been from Queensland and Western Australia
Contract extension is a big problem if interstate clubs draft too many Vic Kids , Witherden is a great example of overpaying.

A good example of why the academy system should be limited to the developing States.
The heartland clubs know they have this advantage but deny it.

When Vic Metro kids do leave non Vic clubs it is generally because they've got offers from Big 4 Vic clubs, with all the $$$ and exposure that comes from that.

This is because footy was invented in Victoria and remains the centre of gravity of the sport.

Does that not demonstrate a failure by the AFL over the last 30 years to put in place a truly national comp?

It’s not as though they haven’t tried in QLD or NSW.

The majority of draftees each year still come from Victoria, so it’s not a surprise they tend to come back when given the chance given the number of teams here and the lure of ‘home’.

Brisbane have made inroads on that front, as have Sydney. The SA and WA sides also seem to hold on to players reasonably well even when they’re not playing well.

The relevant comment I was replying to is:

Its about the national influence oh the AFL administration with an impotent AFL Commission.

Adelaide avoided Vic players like the plague, though their retention of interstate players has been pretty dismal as of recent years. Other than that it felt like clubs were just going best available. Though with Adelaide it was quite obvious they were steering away from interstate players.

Freo and West Coast drafted predominantly local as well.

WA & SA had their local leagues up and running in 2020. Victoria had no local league footy.

Exposed form versus no games / form. You don’t need to be Einstein to work out the best option for recruiting.
You’d have to demonstrate that the Vic clubs preferrenced drafting WA and SA kids over Vic kids, and a cursory look at each of the Vic clubs picks doesn’t really bare that out.

Especially when you look at specific examples, such as Geelong trading up the draft a Vic kid who really wasn’t on any draft watchers top 25 to 30.

Melbourne’s 3 picks all being local (to the point all 3 kids game from the two NAB league teams closest to them). The third kid is a real boom or bust type prospect.

St Kilda’s first pick was similar to Melbourne’s third pick.

With the Vic clubs, it also looks like quite a few preferrenced local kids over interstate kids as well.

While the percentage of Vic kids to non Vic kids drafted this year moved away from the normal percentages, I’d say that was mostly impacted at the back end of the draft, with fewer marginal prospective Vic kids drafted due to the lack of exposed form.

Yeah the SANFL had 14 games so each of the 8 sides had to face 7 opponents twice.

WAFL only had 8 games.

I think you missed the point. There is an increasing trend of non Vic clubs not selecting Vics.

is there an increase of non victorians winning premiership medals? because if that isnt the case, then that just means they are dumb, of course im assuming you are correct.

if you're not correct, maybe it was just a unique year where victorians didnt get to play footy in 2020?

Adelaide have had a 'hire lots of good but not necessarily great SA players and pay them roughly equal' policy for years. They seem disinterested in going out of their way to sign stars.
