Why are the games so long?

So Patrick,
Whatever % we reduce the game by, it should apply to the salary cap, memberships, ticket prices, soft cap, TV's broadcast deal, why should anyone pay the same for less?
You ok with that?
Seems only fair to me.

Who’s Pat?

I agree it's too long at 20 mins and 16 minutes was too short. That means 18 mins was the sweet spot. Gill actually said after covid they won't go back to 20 min quarters but then did anyway, one can only assume the broadcasters had a sook about it. The afl has 40 percent more minutes consumed annually than the nrl, one of the reasons we get so much more money (plus more individual viewers overall and not counting the same person 8x per weekend coz our games overlap).

I don't necessarily want to see a reduction from 20 mins, but the way time on is calculated has crept up over the years. I think we would probably agree that quarters that go for about 30 mins in real time is what the games traditions are based on, and there was never a conscious decision to go away from that, it just seems to have happened.

Regardless of how you cut it up, it is still by far the longest contested ball sport in the world.

(Cricket, tennis, golf etc are ball sports but players aren't competing for the ball)

Darcy? Pat ceased being president of the PA a few weeks ago.

Is it just me or have the games got noticeably longer over the past few years? I went to 5 games over the weekend and I don’t think there was a quarter that was under 30 mins.

I get that we now have a far tighter concussion protocol and the score review system but what else has changed?

I am pretty sure the move from 25 mins quarters to 20 mins, but far more time on came in around 1994 but quarters were much shorter in the 90s despite there being far more goals. You also can’t play for the boundary line any more.

Does anyone have any stats on this?

Umpires inserting themselves into the matches too often

Think of the time saved if umpires shut up instead of STAND STAND STANDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD PLAY ON.

Razor Ray who im a big fan of saying on foxfooty the biggest problem with new umpires was them being nervous and wanting to just "get the game moving" while they are trained to hold things up until all 3 other umpires are in position.

Add that to the list of 100 reasons why games last so long now. Not just waiting for rucks to get in position before a ball up but a whole gaggle of umpires too.

Nothings changed outside of maybe longer score reviews. But note: the game isnt longer if the play stops. Its still only 20 mins per quarter.

There is no doubt that a game of footy in the modern T20/Tiktok world is too long.

It's boring.

It's unnecessary for a game of anything to take more than 80-90 minutes.

I get why it used to be relevant to be a 2 hour game, but with the rules and tactics they introduced to reduce fatigue, it's no longer really test of endurance.

Quarters should be 12 minutes long. 15 absolute max. Plus time on.

The biggest issue with AFL footy is the fixture. And the biggest hurdle with addressing the problems with the fixture is that players aren't physically capable of playing 2 games per week.

If games were far shorter, we'd get more interesting games. More exciting games. But more importantly, we'd get more games. Teams could play twice as many games, which would mean every could play each other twice.

Less running required, meaning more training time to focus on skill and execution. Fat kids that can't sprint 5k in 45 seconds or whatever could still realistically play footy at a decent level.

The main reason 50 Over cricket is dead is that the first ten over were exciting, and the last 10 were exciting. The middle 30 overs where the batting team 'consolidated' the innings was just kind of boring.

AFL footy has so much 'consolidating the innings' time.

People get bored easily these days.
You would ruin football. Ruin it. If qtrs go shorter than 20mins then i quit the game and so will many others in protest.

I quit cricket because of t20 and so did many others.

We had shorter qtrs in 2020. The game was worse for it.

So you want home and away games to be even less important to the premiership then they already are make games more boring and robotic?

I'd like every team to play each other twice if possible

the EPL manage it and somehow the fans don't lose interest

God forbid our players don't have to do a 4 month long pre season for a 6 month long season

A 34 game season would do nothing for the game.

A 34 game season would do nothing for the game.

our sport's entire season including finals lasts 7 months

seasons could easily start in Feb, the players play a handful of practice matches and pre-season games anyway. we even used to have a NAB cup, players didn't die with the additional load
