Opinion Why are the interstate teams so bad? How do we fix them?

And as stated most of these go to the two or three cubs that are at the top of the ladder.

This is why a top Vic side wins multiple premiership or at least one.

The other big advantage is 80 percent of your list is Victorian while at most 50 percent of Fremantle is from wa.
Opposed to the larger WA pool going to the 2 WA clubs?

Those percentages you provided are incorrect, but that’s on Freo not drafting local talent, there is plenty of them.

Tim Kelly went to West Coast after they finished 5th and a premiership the previous year.

This year Luke Jackson looks like heading to Fremantle after they finished 5th and made a Semi and look like they have a strong future.
oh is that so? The jackson trade might set freo back 3-5 years like the jesse hogan one.

Because going by freos history, from 1995 onwards, they have only made back to back finals only once and that was 2012-5.

how come freo couldnt get luke jackson in his draft year?
Selected before your pick but then you targeted him.

Depends if you ruin him like you did with Hogan

That’s on Freo though and bad football decisions made by poor management.

In that time West Coast made three grand finals and won two flags.

Adelaide made three grand finals and won two flags.

Brisbane made four grand finals and won three flags.

You can blame poor management to a certain degree.

Freo and Port didn't have GWS and gold coast type concession picks.

Also injuries over the years and close games and other events beyond freos control have put freos history where they made finals only 8 years between 1995-2022. 8 out of 28 isn't great but it beats going through a 15-20 year run of no finals

Port made 2 grand finals and won one in that time.

Freos mismanagement is the reason why their finals record is so poor since their inception.

If you only draft wa players your list is s**t.

You can't do it.
No said only draft WA players, but Freo have a history of drafting players like Adam Cerra out of Victoria at pick 5 while WA players like Aaron Naughton are still on the board. Freo’s drafting strategy is why they don’t have a large percentage of WA players.

Again.... Freos mismanagement has played a big part. But not all of it.

Go ask your self this question, how come Freo went from 11th in 2021 to 5th in 2022? Management is one thing but other factors played too.

Again..... Explain how Richmond finished 9th in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2006 and 2008. Dead certain in at least 2 or 3 of those years, Richmond had to rely on one side to lose to get 8th and it didn't happen.

Just like when Freo finished 9th in 2004. Freo had to rely on Essendon to win by a significant amount to get in. Essendon won by 17 points.

No different to this season where dogs got 8th in the final round off beating hawks and reliant on Carlton to lose

Naughton said he didn't want to play for Freo, he wanted to play in Victoria. He was born in Victoria too

This is an interesting exercise.

8 free agents came into Vic from other states over the past five years.

6 free agents left Vic to other states since 2018.

Roughly the same % correlation considering number of Vic teams (10) in the comp (18).

A handful of players switched clubs within Victoria and between non vic states.
Its not only numbers, its who they are and where they go.
Care to give us those details.

And thats the point, when you set up a system whereby more players can return to clubs in one state and you structure it to suit that return when they are on the cusp of their prime, the advantage it creates is blatant and effective.
No one is saying players dont move out of Victoria or between non Vic clubs but those pale in comparison to players who return to Victoria in number and quality.

Its not only numbers, its who they are and where they go.

Ok, go get all the numbers, don't fudge now, get the numbers of players that have moved, lets say 15 years should do it.

And don't just do Victoria do all clubs, if you think it's that bad, the numbers should prove it.

Freo and their so call mismanagement (something I strongly dispute btw) had nothing to do with Lobb's partner getting a lucrative job back in Melbourne and moving back already.

That's just rotten luck beyond Freo's control.

No different due to cam McCarthy taking a year off in 2016 after GWS didn't want to trade him to Freo.

That was beyond both GWS giants and dockers control

Naughton said he didn't want to play for Freo, he wanted to play in Victoria. He was born in Victoria too
I know he was born in Vic but lived in WA since he was 9. Players don’t get a choice where they are drafted to, ridiculous Freo let a teenager dictate their draft strategy

I hope we never see a repeat of the Cam McCarthy fiasco.

I remember at the time, many Carlton fans wanted us to take up with our first pick in the 2013 draft.

We took an little known WA bolter by the name of Patrick Cripps instead :)

What’s this got to do with anything?
And it’s relevance to the thread?

Longmire biggest losing margins have been in both Grand Finals.

Think there is something there truthfully.
Poor Grand Final coach? Pressure gets to him

No idea what it is but he does a lot right to get us there.
Well this year he beat Melbourne at the MCG so it can’t be the venue. 2016 lost a home qualify final, probably crumbles under the pressure I’d say.
