The particular "supplement"James Hird pressed his players to receive by injection--against the club doctor's advice--is an immunostimulive thymosin drug, still being investigated by medical researchers. The drug's potential to accelerate healing of muscle tissue also causes liver enzyme induction, which was ultimately reflected in the rapid development of soft tissue injuries and
Essendon's decline in performance: they were 8:1 and second on the ladder by May of 2012 then physically suffered the consequences, losing the last seven games.

While some TV personalities still defend Essendon's management (and their keeping Dr. Ried out of the loop), while reserving criticism of ASADA, the agency ended up protecting 38 players from the yet to be determined long-term effects of the peptide on the immune system. If the players involved later develop a chronic myopathy, I can see a long line of ambulance-chasing lawyers knocking on the doors of those 38 players. Hopefully they will not suffer any complications down the road.

It will be interesting to see how well the returning players fare in 2017. Let's hope that the culture of win-at-any-cost that Sheedy left at the club will dissipate and the qualities of skill and courage are once again extolled.

Chronic Myopathy?

You mean really sore muscles , stiffness, cramps and spasms in later years after retirement?

Only peptide taking Essendon players will feel like that hey?

The Age had an article couple of years ago that TB4 is less harmful than coffee. Adelaide Uni study showed AOD to be a dud. Plus only banned in sports. So what particular supplement could endanger their life??

What else did they take? Surely there are some records to tell them and help allay any fears?

I think you need to dig a bit deeper. This wasn't about single, unapproved chemicals being used in isolation.

I assume what was on the forms.

Two of Australia's most respected judges dug deeply. What about the AFL report re 12 other clubs supplement use. Three with "extensive needle programs".

Follow the form. Dank's modus operandi across multiple clubs and leagues is now well documented. The SMS' about stacking at EFC, etc.

Are you talking PEDs or or actual life threatening supplements which is what i'm responding to. Calves blood, colostrum, animal supplement that is actually used in day to day medication? How can you not say what the other 12 clubs gave was not as harmful? If you're going to accuse someone of threatening your life then you need evidence.

ROFL! Welcome to the HTB, where there has been many years of trolling, debate and discussion.
Feel free to avail yourself of all the past threads on this.

Yes, because the Age is a well known scientific publication.

What you and others STILL overlook is that while AOD was found to not be the anti obesity drug calzada was claiming, it was, however, found to have other properties widely espoused among body builders, and you can bet one of the main Reasons Dank was using it. It was also still an experimental drug and should never have been used on your players. As for TB4 being harmless, perhaps by itself, but when used in combination with other compounds, the long term health effects are completely unknown.

First of all it was the Age interviewing a doctor who was supposedly an expert in the field that made the claim. AOD was found to have no such effects.
As for TB4, isn't it naturally occurring in the body? If as you say if you say the effect of combining with other compounds is unknown, how can you say it poses a risk to your life.

Plenty of stuff that naturally occurs in the body can be bad for if taken in dosages that increase normal level.

There is suggestion that Human Growth Hormones (HgH) and Insulation Growth factor (IGF-1) in higher dosages puts you at higher risk of developing cancer, yet both are necessary for life. Only suggested not confirmed due to the length of time that cancer can take to develop.

There is already evidence to suggest that above natural levels of TB4, while not cancer causing itself, due to it's function in cell growth and repair will increase the malignancy of existing cancer cells.

This its naturally occurring thus must be safe is a s*#$ argument

Cancer cells (in its various forms) occur naturally, yet don't think anyone wants to increase the number of cancer cells they have.

TB4 has only ever been used in clinical trials to assist regeneration and repair after damage. I'm certainly not arguing that it shouldn't be on WADA list as many others may do.

All clubs including Essendon are on supplement programs. We assume none of those supplements are on the WADA banned list. But many of those supplements are also naturally occurring . Are they taken at a greater quantity/level than TB4? Maybe. Just because they are not on the WADA banned list doesn't mean they could be less harmful in large doses.

Analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs and local anaesthetics that players use commonly may be even more harmful to players long term health. Look at the NFL, several hundred ex players are currently trying to sue the NFL for the use of pain killers that has left many of them addicted and/or still suffering side effects.

Remember a few years ago players were taking 6-7 shots of coffee before games?

Did that doctor make reference to the combinations and doses of the various drugs being taken and whether there are potential risks with drug cocktails?

Maybe the good doctor can tell the players because they dont know what they took.
