Why "Bomber" Thompson?

The GF just asked me why specifically Mark Thompson's nickname was 'Bomber' and how he got it.

I didn't know specifically so I thought I'd ask here.

Actually, I believe it was a childhood nickname. I think it was spelt Bomba or something? A character from a cartoon at the time.

Then going to Essendon it became Bomber.

To clear this up once and for all, he was nicknamed Bomba as a kid after this guy who played Bomba in Tarzan films and the like.

Mark liked to climb trees as a kid as was thus nicknamed Bomba. When he played for Essendon, the media transformed Bomba to Bomber.
