Why can't North afford to bottom out?

Then how will you afford a red pen?

maybe but we have more members than those clubs and have so for the last few years.

I think we have grown enough to the point where in the future bottoming out won't be a big issue
I think North have one of the more loyal fan bases.
It just doesn't stretch as far beyond the core, making it hard for them to grow as easily.

Geography doesnt mean s**t in Melbourne.

For what is worth as long as melbourne is growing in population, all 10 teams are safe.

North have 40k+ members

Access to the ground isn't the issue. It's about 'why would new supporters join North'?
And geography isn't in their favour in regards to that.

"Geography isn't the issue; geography isn't in North's favour."

:drunk:

North's strong stance to not bottom out and maintain a strong culture is admirable, sadly its unsustainable to push for a serious flag tilt, think everyone would agree that long term, you'd much rather have The Saints, Dees and the Doggies lists for long term success than NM's.

The fault is with the draft/socialist system that punishes teams who refuse to bottom out.

You can't distinguish between those two concepts?

How do they market to new supporters?
It can be done, just harder for them than other teams.
Melbourne should find it easier to take the inner city; dons go for a large area from inner north west and then spread out, while the dogs from inner west and out. They can market to new residents that are unaligned. North have a much smaller pocket of land to work with.
Geography is a bit of an obstacle in that regard.

What's my club got to do with it ? We know we're s**t, simply stating that North's teams of battlers, is a 6th placed team (at best)

North haven't had access to top young tier talent like the other small 3 Vic clubs, so I think that's a legit excuse.

And, they are have no chance at signing a big name young player like Treloar, because they haven't got the draft picks and trade assests to satisfy GWS. Would the Giants actually want any of North's young players in a trade ?
I wouldn't have thought so. (Sideshow Ben is a star, and untouchable and GWS don't need him anyway)

Not trying to have a crack at North but they are stuck in footy's purgatory (which is still a lot more respectable then Carlton's position right now I might add)

2008 wants its thread back.

Pre Hobart, debt reduction, facilities, 18 teams.

Suggesting a couple of appearances in the bottom four is bottoming out, is a bit rich.

Weird thread but in a strange way Brad Scott is eroding away why a lot of people wanted to ensure North remained in Melbourne.

Trying to snipe Harvey into retirement goes against securing the all time record holder and another aspect that makes North unique.

They are out of the woods in terms of being able to slide for a few years but at the same time, the Brad Scott way is emptying the club of what made people want them around in the first place.

Having an arrogant, elitist type representing the club is fine as long as they aren't out of touch and just make excuses, ridicule spirit and culture and create a sterile environment where one does not belong.

Emotional detachment is what Scott brings and hopefully he offers that when he steps down in October.

People saying geography doesn't matter these days are wrong. Ok yes it is increasingly becoming less and less important. But it may surprise you how many of a club's fans live in their "traditional" territories. Put it this way, according to that Herald Sun map they did last year, around 8000 of North's members are from Kensington, Flemington and North Melbourne alone.

Harvey has been there for 20 years, not sure why you want him to change now...

Don't forget the curse of Lindsay Thomas.

Yep. It still lingers.

Played our only 4 quarter game against Geelong when he missed.

Not that confident against Melbourne because the coaches will be going through the biannual routine of trying to get him into form. Always at the expense of the other forwards and mids which chokes them up.

They're reminiscent of 02-06 Melbourne

I love you Thats Wright (no homo). Any chance to refer to Thomas or Brad Scott and you seize it.
And I'm pretty sure North are going to play finals this year. Might even win one if you play Richmond or Footscray.

Should do considering they are playing the Dees, Saints, Freo after the derby, Dogs back from Perth and our bunnies the Tigers.

Glad to see you understand.

Scotts the main cause of the mediocrity and Thomas the main cause of inconsistency.

That being said, glad you see the wisdom in less rotations and not hiring a malthouse lackey.

Memberships fluctuate on form. You've been a better side than the other 3 clubs for the last few years.

We seemingly play you after a 6 day break from Perth once a year. Weird quirk of the draw.

I feel your frustration. If such a thing exists, North are my second team so I'd like to see them do well. Wouldn't be looking to offer Brad Scott any contract extensions unless North are top 4 and winning finals in 2015-16. And hopefully your next president is stronger and more forthright than Brayshaw. Otherwise it's time for a cleanout and rebuild with a new coach, president and playing list. No more short-term fixes with recruiting old blokes or 'mini-rebuild' nonsense and limply floating around mid-table.
