Why continue with the abomination that is AAMI?

$350m for a new stadium in Adelaide would not stack up financially. Telstra Dome in Melbourne only works because of the large amount of events held there. A new stadium in Adelaide would only host AFL games and not much else as i'm sure there would be an outcry if cricket was played anywhere else but Adelaide Oval.

AAMI Stadium is not a bad ground and much better than the old VFL/Waverley Park. Shame it's not closer to the city. Ideally if it had a train line out there would make it a lot more user friendly.

Screw a new stadium. Spend some money redoing the western grandstand at Adelaide Oval, boost capacity to 50,000 (from about 32,000 now I think) and sell the AAMI Stadium land off to a developer to off set the cost.

Given that adelaide oval will never, ever be redeveloped, where would we possibly put a huge stadium (and parking! car parking galore?!) that is anywhere close to the CBD?

Not gonna happen. The land itself would cost bazillions, unless we use the parklands, and that really, really won't happen.

Actually they have been redeveloping Adelaide Oval for about the last 15 years. You might have noticed the Bradman Stand and the Chappell Stands on the eastern side of the ground. The western stand is next on the list and (forget if it was state or federal) the SACA just got a large slice of funding to do it.

They would have done the whole lot at once and had a world class stadium with a decent capacity but it is hard to raise the funds when it is just one sport driving the development.

Railyards was the perfect place and talked about but the SANFL don't want to move from AAMI, looks like they will build a new Hospital there now so that option is probably gone.

Ah yes, that is true. Still, they will never rip down the smallish stands there (fitting what, 25k?) and put up massive concrete ones that seat 3x as many. There would be a cricketing outcry.

And you'd lose the hill!

If there was a stadium built in the CBD, there would be a reason for the State govt to improve public transport in general which in turn would help out on non-footy days aswell.

But also, people say that the atmosphere of kicking the footy before the game would be lost...but I think just having a stadium in the city would be a pretty good trade off. Also, depending on where they built it, there could still be room enough for car parking and bbq/footy kicking etc.

This has been debated for ever and the same things get bought up.

Firstly, too much has been spent on AAMI and more is planned for it to be raised and another stadium built elsewhere.

Second, the Adlaide Oval is actually part of the parklands and no concrete standium is allowed to be built there. Everything has to blend in to the western stands.
While having a stadium in the CBD is always going to have it's supporters and critics, but I seriously doubt a state government would put any coin into something that the local
league has no intention of leaving.

Lastly, light rail is the answer. A number of progressive cities are putting in trams to replace old rundown railways. This type of transport can also replace buses as well.

Unfortunately I think we've already missed the boat for the below reasons:

1. The money spent on Hindmarsh Stadium should never have been spent. We should've sold off AAMI before the new stand was built and used the money from Hindmarsh and AAMI to build a new super complex in the city for AFL & Soccer (like Telstra Dome).

2. The Adelaide oval doesn't need to be redeveloped. What a waste of money. The new stands are now suitable and the Ovel only sells out once a year normally; with this years Ashes series being an exception. The money spent here by the Government should've been used on a new Football stadium. The SACA should get over themselves, you missed the chance at having football at the oval.

As I see it there are two potential options in the city for a new stadium.
1. In the rail yards with the trains going under the stadium; or
2. In the Southern Parklands between Goodwood Rd and Sir Lewis Cohen Ave. This would be in between the tram line and Keswick rail station (about 5 minute walk) and would still have enough parklands around it for people to park and have the traditional BBQ. There is a heap of land here which isn't being used (I know - It will be blocked by the Save the Parklands cronnies)

Option 2 would be close to the city and unley road so people can go to pubs, etc afterwards.

and that is the major problem right there the people that are making these decisions are doing so through rose coloured glasses. Those people that are making these decisions are dinosaurs that have been there for too long and that stadium is their legacy. They are far too sentimentally attached to make sound decisions regarding it IMO.

Its the same reason why older generations retain their houses and watch them decrease in value and fall around them instead of selling them when they are still of value and buying something newer and better somewhere else.

I agree with the green and disagree with the red text.

Nothing will be built in the parlands, remember the cuffuffle regarding the small building being planned in the Victoria Park racecourse for the motor racing fraterity.

Exactly right relapse!

This is why the state/federal government needs to put a halt on all future funding of AAMI until a analysis on done on a new stadium. This is what is currently happening in WA.

Someone neutral can shift through the detail, have a consultative process and give us the facts. Then everyone can make an informed decision.

Sounds great, BUT the only opinions that unfortunately matter in this instance are Basheer and Whicker. The SANFL dont give a rats about the best interests of footy in SA. They have learnt nothing from the 1990 fiasco they are the same incompetant fools that bumbled around joining the VFL and then didnt want to when their egos got crushed.

Sure money can be spent elsewhere by the govt etc, but in the long run, having an extra 40,000 people every weekend (maybe a little more, maybe a little less) has got to be a bonus for the state in pretty much most ways.

Parking wouldn't be so bad either because hopefully people would use public transport. Plus like someone else said, there are plenty of places around the city that would be no further than what people walk to West Lakes from. Anywhere near or along the tram would be alright, and you wouldn't have to pay for the tram because I think it is going to be free in the CBD.

AAMI Stadium is tired and lacking, bandaid refurbishments just aren't going to cut it any more. All the other states either have decent stadiums or are looking to build a decent stadium, why can't SA have the balls to do something like that?

AAMI Stadiums not a bad location for those on that side of town, but I live up towards Tea Tree Plaza and it can take maybe an hour and a half up to two hours if the busses dont go smoothly. I left at 5.20 and got there just before 7 last night.

You're catching the wrong buses! Took me 45-50 minutes on the St Agnes depot Footy Express on Saturday night :thumbsu:

I train at AAMI twice a week, and from the TTP area it takes me maybe 40 minutes tops to drive there in peak hour on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. I do realise however, that is very different to match day traffic!

Far too many posts to do them all justice, however, IMHO, raze Footy Park even though I live 800 meters away, but first raze Adelaide Oval to the ground, build a 100,000, enclosed roofed stadium right there, put the tram line down to the stadium and into North Adelaide and down Port Road, divy up the membership rights between the SACA and the SANFL, and the clubs as we do now. We play cricket, football and whatever else will fit.

Not in your lifetime if the Adelaide City Council has anything to do with. ;)
