Opinion Why do Geelong get the final round fixture in Geelong every season (since the mid 2000's) ?

Since the mid 2000's Geelong have had a fixture at home every season leading into the finals. Firstly why is this? do Geelong have a deal with the A.F.L ? so they won't complain about not having finals in Geelong? also why isn't this discussed more often ? it's probably the worst fixture anomaly in the game.

I realize that the VIc teams don't really travel either in the final round but that's for another thread.

They should make the top 8 vic teams from the year before have an away game in the last game of the season.

This is what happens when the season drags on and on for no purpose.

You get embarrassing spectacles which does nothing for supporters and the clubs morale heading into next season.

You do not need 24 rounds of football to finalize the best 8 to go forward.

It's always effectively a soft run into finals with a few notable exceptions

If Geelong are Top 4 a lot, then a majority of the teams they're going to play are "easier" teams with nothing to play for in the last round.

The Eagles have sent their B team, for instance.

Additionally, it's rare for the last result to matter for Geelong as they have no true "home finals".

It's about travel, that's a small leg up.

50% are away games and 0% in 20 years seems like its planned.

Given that Geelong are 2-8 in the first week of finals the last ten times coming off a home game maybe the club needs to start campaigning to fix this obvious disadvantage? Another case of AFL MELbias perhaps. And remember that one of the wins was thanks to future Geelong great Isaac Smith and the other was thanks to finals champion Gary Rohan.

It's a good point. A soft run into finals isn't an advantage, especially with the frankly pointless pre-finals bye

With only 9 games a year at their home ground I suggest its reasonable to do this.
Probably makes scheduling a bit easier for the AFL because it keeps the game away from the MCG & Marvel.

The real reason is quite boring and the same reason why bulldogs are playing in Ballarat and hawks playing in tassie.

Gives the afl maximum flexibility in scheduling the final round. If they had 3 games lined up at the G or Marvel they have to play one on the Friday night. This way, they don’t. \end thread.

Also been a few seasons where we had no games in Geelong for first part of the season due to redevelopments. Pushing them back increases the chance of the last game being in Geelong

We went almost 500 days without a Geelong vs West Coast matchup. Why didn't the AFL pull the other lever to give Geelong two artificial % boosts like they did for some other clubs?
