Opinion Why do Geelong get the final round fixture in Geelong every season (since the mid 2000's) ?

What would you rather:

Good chance to start the season with a win with a game at your home ground

Finish the season with a potentially dead rubber at your home ground

This year was the second time along with 2014 that we played round 1 in Geelong in nearly 20 years.

Since the mid 2000's Geelong have had a fixture at home every season leading into the finals. Firstly why is this? do Geelong have a deal with the A.F.L ? so they won't complain about not having finals in Geelong? also why isn't this discussed more often ? it's probably the worst fixture anomaly in the game.

I realize that the VIc teams don't really travel either in the final round but that's for another thread.
its usually against the bottom 3 team as well

Cats getting an artificial % boost via playing a bottom 4 side at home in the final round is just another lever the AFL pull for the result they want.
Now watch GWS get torched by the umps to ensure Geelong dont face Sydney in Sydney.
Anti Geelong bias making us wait until the final round to get our WC % boost

We went almost 500 days without a Geelong vs West Coast matchup. Why didn't the AFL pull the other lever to give Geelong two artificial % boosts like they did for some other clubs?

Probably because those other clubs, Hawks and Carlton, are other Vic clubs that needed some soft kills late to shape the 8.

Deflecting from your team's performance?

Western Bulldogs in 23; WCE in 22; Melbourne in 21. No home games in 20. I guess that’s “usually” for a Tigers supporter

Just trying to remember maybe you can help did we beat your team in a qualifying final then a preliminary final and then a grand final after that

The real reason is quite boring and the same reason why bulldogs are playing in Ballarat and hawks playing in tassie.

Gives the afl maximum flexibility in scheduling the final round. If they had 3 games lined up at the G or Marvel they have to play one on the Friday night. This way, they don’t. \end thread.

I was just going to post this. We're probably happy enough to have it (or actually request it) and it probably suits the AFL to be able to pencil in GMHBA as a venue for the final round to allow the other matches and venues to be scheduled wherever suits.

Yes that’s right and if the AFL was serious about giving the Cats an unfair R24 advantage they’d have sent the wooden spooners down the highway yesterday.

We don't get finals there so the last round of the H&A is the last time an AFL game is played at that stadium for the year.

Now there won't be a game of AFL footy played there for what like 7 or 8 months.

Mine as well maximize the Geelong region's crowd.

If WC were a top 8 team and had to play Geelong in an away game, surely they would prefer to play Geelong where there's a weeks break afterwards with the interstate travel they have to do? Either the last game or a game before a bye. Could argue it's a leg up for opposing interstate teams...

St Kilda beating Carlton and Freo beating Port to ensure Geelong don't face Sydney in Sydney.

Since Geelong's run of constant finals began in 2004, 17 of the 21 final rounds has been played at Kardinia, four have been against WCE with Geelong winning all of them with an average Geelong winning margin of 80.5pts.

There has been a game each at Marvel, the GABBA, MCG and Carrara (COVID year).

Geelong has won 18 of the 21 match-ups with an average winning margin of 57 points. Of the 3 lost games, 2 have been in seasons when they've missed finals and the other one was a 4 point loss to that year's premiers, Melbourne.

Where we had the win and the minor premiership in hand with 40 seconds to go, with a free kick from a deliberate out of bounds on our defensive 50. We proceeded to put the free kick out on the full, cough up a ridiculous 50 by punching the ball away, then let Gawn take a relatively uncontested mark at the top of the goal square with 20 seconds remaining.

Of course, 2013 against Brisbane would be an example of a bit of home cooking where the pumps swallowed the whistle in the dying seconds to preserve a Geelong win in a game that we 100% deserved to lose.

Neither of those games have snhthing to do with Geelong playing Sydney, it cant happen now.
The only change possible in the top 4 is if we lose by enough to give Geelong 2nd on % and play you in Melbourne rather than here.

This is what happens when the season drags on and on for no purpose.

You get embarrassing spectacles which does nothing for supporters and the clubs morale heading into next season.

You do not need 24 rounds of football to finalize the best 8 to go forward.
No purpose? If we didn't need 24 rounds and ended it weeks ago.....Carlton have a home final and double chance, Essendon are playing finals while Hawthorn and Bulldogs miss out.

It's probably in part due to our requests and a few anomolies.

  1. I think we had the stadium redevelopment push home games to the back of the season
  2. We have asked for Collingwood at the G
  3. We have Hawthorn on Easter Monday
The requests probably happen more often than not in the early part of the season leaving "left over games"

You have;
  • a club that has only 9 home games a season meaning two other clubs get extra home games.
  • 18 clubs with only 23 games
  • a whole round in a single city for no apparent reason
  • Grand Final played at a single venue that happens to be home ground for specific clubs
  • Guaranteed games played by the same clubs at certain times of the year
  • At least 3 of the 4 'big' Victorian clubs play each other twice every year without fail.
  • The other clubs shafted to all corners of the country where the 'big' clubs dare not tread.
  • The same teams beamed into our living room on regular basis in prime time.

And this is the worst fixture anomaly in the game.
FMD!
