It is how it goes with these things. The other nu-metals had other strings to their bow as well. Think about it like the seattle 4, those were all very different that just happened to fall under the sceney banner label of grunge for a time.

If you were a casual observer at the turn-of-the-millennium, they were most certainly in that nu-metal crowd, for better or worse. Who cares. Just enjoy them or dont.

you do them a disservice by forgetting grindcore.
not many drummers can hold a candle to joey's blast beats.

Back in 2000 no, but 20 years later there's a lot of great blast beaters

They might have shown different influences a few albums in but the first 2 were definitely nu-metal.

Simplistic, repetitive guitar riffs
Interchanging growling and whiney vocals
Angsty hate my parents lyrics
Turntables and DJ samples

Thats about all it takes.

They are utter s**t.
The metal version of the Grateful Dead for single mothers of three and the men who smoke ice to breed with them.

Slipknot are alright. Jordison is arguably the greatest rock/metal drummer of his generation. Taylor is a great front man who has matured after taking personally some criticism that he couldn't hold a song without singing '*' every third word. Their costumes probably detract from their music legacy.

I don't really get this. You ask why Slipknot get pigeon holed as nu metal, then you go on to call them nu metal in your post?

Djent didn't exist in 1999 when their debut came out.

There is nothing about their music that relates to Death metal

Prog? Are you kidding me? What about their music is progressive, or has any relation to prog-rock?

Apart from some of Corey's "clean" vocals, their music doesn't contain much melody either, the guitar riffs are just low-end chug fests.

I was thinking this too, though Meshuggah were a couple of albums deep in 99, the term djent wasnt invented yet and I don't hear any Meshuggah in the Slipknot sound at all.
