I find this quite puzzling, given how the Tiger's went last season.

They finished on top of the ladder with the most wins, and were fancies to go back to back all of 2018. Many called called the, the best team of last year (which IMO is debatable), and they only stuffed up in the prelim. So, when the AFL were making up the fixture in the preseason, why did they give Richmond 7 consecutive home games to close out the season?

And what's even worse is that 4 out of those games are against interstate clubs - so it isn't a case of co-tenants playing each other. They actually have more games back to back against interstate clubs then they do Victorian ones. This is for a team that only lost 4 games last year.

How did this eventuate?

I don't think Port should get 4 AO in a row after the bye, if they want to play in China (no less as the away team) then they have to put up with the travel factor. Where's the uproar there. Interstate bias!!!

Because they were deprived of MCG home games through the early/mid part of the season. 9 of 13 games away from the G from Round 3 through Round 16 was ridiculous at the time, and stands as a being an even bigger fixture flaw as these away games are compensated towards season's end.

As it stands Richmond only get 5 home games against non co-tenants for the whole season (7 if we count Carlton)

Next game is an away game to the Pies.

Also why do West Coast get to play an away game against Melbourne on neutral territory given they are the reigning premiers? Seems an unfair advantage

That's Melbournes choice to sell games there. They generally seem to choose the higher interstate side.

Let’s see:

Round 17 vs GWS - They hosted us at Spotless earlier in the year.
Round 18 vs Port - Again, Hosted us at AO early in the year
Round 19 Vs Collingwood - Their home game which happens to be the MCG.
Round 20 vs Melbourne - Their home game which happens to be the G
Round 21 vs the Blues - They hosted us at the G round 1

What’s the issue?

Then we have the Eagles and Lions who we played away last year.

It's to make the fixture scrupulously fair, the Tigers need time on the MCG before the finals start so they are not at a disadvantage.
The GFL were hoping the Tigers were done and dusted by the time the 7 G games come around.

On a broader level, ground rationalisation went too far in the 90s/00s in , should be a third ground in Melbourne where AFL matches are played - Princes Park was discarded too quickly.

Yes,we had Waverley back in the day.

Richmond still on top of the moral ladder btw.

Richmond played only 4 MCG matches in the previous 13 weeks. There's no reason why our MCG/Home schedule should have been so back-ended.

This is correct, it is the AFL's fault this. No team under any circumstances ever should play at one ground 7 consecutive weeks in the home and away season. It is poor fixturing by the AFL. Nothing more, nothing less. Not Richmonds fault.

Don't reckon there would be too many complaints if our lack of MCG games earlier in the season when we were the most short handed had meant we were out of finals contention at this point.

Easy for oppos to whine now but I'm pretty sure we weren't overly happy with a heavy interstate and superherodome games for most of the first half of season.

Also, given we finished on top last year and only 3 interstate teams made finals we were always going to end up with double ups against top Melbourne teams from last year, being Melbourne and Collingwood who just happen to be at the G too. If we'd instead ended up with double ups against non MCG teams there would be whinging about us getting an easy draw. Can't win.
