Why do the Greeks Support Collingwood?

What is it with the migrants from Greece that they all support Collingwood?

Nothing to do with colours; nothing to do with a famous player from Greece and nothing to do with culture. In fact one of their greatest players was from a neighbouring Country that the Greeks would not let use their own name.

But most Greeks and their children, cousins and family back on the goat farm seem to support this stinking Club.

Why is this so?

Not all do, but you are right there is a high percentage that do follow Collingwood, as well as Richmond & Carlton.

Back in the 50's-60's when the Greek imigrants came out here they mostly settled in working class inner city suburbs like Collingwood, Abottsford, Richmond, Fitzroy, Carlton & Brunswick(who's team also has Collingwoods colours) as those were the suburbs which had available rental properties and most affordable areas to buy a home at the time. Generally speaking the Greek community have prospered over the decades and are now spread out all over Melbourne, but have stayed loyal to the team from the area their parents or grand parents originally settled.

Same goes for other migrants from other European countries who came out here at the time. If you went to Primary school in Collingwood/Abbotsford/Brunswick etc back in the 60-70's, the majority of the kids at schools in those areas barracked for Collingwood, so it's not hard to work out why a Greek kid would want to fit in and barrack for them as well....

An ex of mine was big hawks supporter, whole family were hawks supporters including all the relos. Made for very animated BBQ's.

The most famous of all Collingwood Greeks: ( macedonian) Daics was originally a South Supporter.

Depends if you are talking about the region in Greece called macedonia or the republic which is separate, or the generalised term which incorporates parts of Bulgaria, Alabania and some other country I cant recall.

Plus he is in the AFL Greek team of the century.

In other words, you got no answer as to why the Prelim final has become your Grand Final and you cant quite win one of those anyway!!!

And one might take the analogy further and say that the prelim is very 'Greek' to you, as you tend to cop it up the clacker on that prelim Final day time and time again!!!
