Why would you get 2 premiership points instead of 4 after winning a game of footy? Has it always been this way, or is it a new thing in the league to get 2 premiership points? Is this a good thing?

'Why do you get four in the VFL?' Was my question as a kid starting out watching footy.

I guess it's what you are used to. The Vic system of 4 points for a win seemed strange to us.

2 points for a win, 1 for a draw seems pretty logical to me.

It is interesting that there is a difference in how its treated, but there's nothing wrong with either. Each to their own.

Technically, the SA version is more logical, 4-point wins and 2-point draws reminds me of the current Aussie currency ... I mean ... why don't they just divide everything by 5?

But it's still all the same in the wash-up.

I think the AFL should start looking at bonus points, similar to the Super 12 Competition.

Say a losing bonus point for getting within 15 points of the oppositions
And a goalscoring bonus for kicking 20 goals.

This would encourage teams to play a more exciting brand of football, in order to get the extra bonus point.

That was the reasoning the Super 12 had. For teams to get the 4 try bonus, they would have to play more exciting and attacking brand of football.

Would be nice to think attacking play could be encouraged like that, WCE; but unlike the percentage system, giving bonus points for high scoring is weighted in favour of teams playing in better conditions.
