Why doesn't Hawkins get free kicks?

The players are to blame for our appalling free kick differential. Just ask our coach, who unlike other coaches who get a raw deal chooses to blame the club rather than ask for clarification and fairness from the league.

Yes...this is something that Chris Scott could and should do better. No need to go over the line just be a bit more public about it. Maybe it is being done behind closed doors and if it is....well...it is not working. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Last year our forwards got more opportunity for creating space for one reason: SJ. He gave us structure up the ground. When he wasn't thumping players ands getting reported. This year I see too much unthinking long bombs to the inside 50. Duncan and sometimes Motlop being the exceptions

The club was asking for clarification earlier this year, but one of our problems is that specially with the frees against, we aren't high in just one area, but rather we seem to change each week with what we are giving frees away for.

If we had a high concentration of frees against for high tackles, it's an area that club could target to improve on, but what's happening is one week we give away high tackle frees, the next week we will have a high count of holding frees and then it might be a high count if holding the ball against us.

It's hard to seek clarification in that situation - better if we had one clear area we gave away frees for.

Another conspiracy theory thread

Not conspiracy IMO...

But he needs to help himself more...

And there are times where he gets mugged and the green gremlins just stare at him...

Its a multitude of things...

I think it's similar to how Travis Cloke got umpired in marking contests a few years back. Hawkins is usually so much stronger than his direct opponent, that any time he rag dolls them, the umpire automatically assumes he's pushed his opponent out of the way. A prime example of this was when we played the Bulldogs a few weeks back and Hawkins outbodied his opponent beautifully at the top of the goal square, but was judged to have pushed his opponent away. Five minutes later Menzel had two hands in his opponent's back and took a mark, and the mark was paid.

Of course, if he got on his bike a bit more and played in front, he wouldn't have to rely on outbodying opponents.

Because he cries for them constantly like a whiney sook.

He needs to change his mindset is all. Right now he looks fed up. Getting blocked/held etc and nothing going his way there when he would see others getting those frees would have him getting frustrated and "sooking" somewhat.

There were two incidents I saw that were a perfect example of this. Hawkins was "blocked" from going for a mark. It was obvious and he put his arms up in the air after it and looked at the umpire ... as you would.

Then a swans player was blocked near their 50. It was there ... it was paid.

Now if those were being paid to Hawk then they would occur less and as such he would get a better go at contesting for the ball and as such his mindset would change again.

Hopefully the team's "frank discussion" after the game has highlighted how he looks on field and he does pull his head in ... go for the ball and even if he gets blocked etc - keep going and make the defenders more accountable.

And then Alir boarded him like a passenger on a flight and sat there for 16 hours...

And no free paid.

I reckon the frustration is justified. Could we see less of it - sure - but at the same point the issue of things going against him is not new and the accumulative effect has some baring to his reaction IMO.

Good point. At the moment defenders know they can get away with a lot that they shouldn't. Hard to see how this will change unless the umpires pay more attention and pay the frees that are currently not being paid.

Does this require a club or CS WTF to the umpiring department?

Or does this constitute a sook?

He's been molested all year long. He must be infinitely frustrated. People always throw out the hyperbole about not wanting to watch the game because of the standard of umpiring but this year it's actually warranted. Between the horrendous HTB interpretations, and the downright criminal DOB, it really is becoming unsightly. Hawkins has been marauded all year long; he's constantly held, yet when he engages he gets pinged for holding the man. And if not he's just blocked out of the contest. In all honesty, just watch the blocking. It happens 2-3 times a quarter. He's not playing well, but his frustration is more than warranted.

That is what he presents image wise to the public.
On SEN they have an ex umpire on weekly during the breakfast show and he mentioned that coaches are on the phone angry and questioning the umpiring department every Monday...

And he shouldn't name the worst offenders... but they are brothers.

I got the impression Scott does plenty of following up his issues behind closed doors... like many other things he just presents a different side in public

In the wrestling he's just as guilty as his opponent for holding. His first free kick and goal on Friday was a poor decision and should have been paid against him. I agree he should have got the free when the guy was on top of him, but every other time, he starts behind at a disadvantage and is forced to give away frees to get around his opponent.

The reason the team gives away a lot of frees is usually lack of strength at the contest. High tackles and in the back from sloppy tackling and falling into tackles rather than standing their ground.

Dangerfield, Selwood and Guthrie seem to win their fair share. Bartel and Mackie have become a bit too obvious with their arm chopping as they don't get as close or high as they used to.

Every club with a decent key forward complains that their player doesn't get the frees, nothing in it. Except WC because their player does get all the frees at home at least.

I've seen 4 eagles games this year and in every one there are 2-3 WTF frees paid to a key forward in a gimme position

If Hawkins got the frees Kennedy does there'd be a lot less whining about Hawkins around here, for sure.
