That's not true. The two premierships we won without playing in a Grand Final (1897 and 1924) were both intimes far removed from any world wars. They were full-on normal league seasons. Both years, the top four teams qualified for the finals. The four finalists would play the other three teams once each, and they would have a mini finals series-ladder after those three matches. Whoever was on top of the ladder after those three matches won the premiership. Essendon "won" the finals series in 1897 and 1924, and therefore were deserved premiers.
Carlton won three war-time premierships in 1914,1915 and 1945. Want me to take those away from you?
