Why Hughes?

That may be true but is Philip Hughes in form? That to me is the most pressing issue. Not the short ball. If Hughes is in form he plays the short ball well, if he is out of form he looks ugly with that delivery. It only really troubles him from what I have seen, when he is a bit short of form.

Yeh hes in fair form - he won the game for NSW with an 80* in the one dayer a week ago. This following a good 50 against england for Australia A. He was fine against the short ball.

He looks ugly anyway and he does seem the sort of player who can scramble runs from somewhere.

His more pressing problem is that he'll just about have a swish at anything even slightly wide so if there is any swing about, which the English bowlers are more likely to get than ours, he'll nick to slip before you know it.

That's funny. Steve Waugh was 'suspect' against the short ball as well, and he went okay. Remember the 95 WI series when they bowled more bouncers than Inflation nightclub. He scored a double ton.

That's because Waugh completely removed the hook shot from his game.

Hughes has that ability to make lots and lots of runs. Doesn't matter about his technique - you can't ignore how good his first class record has been. he has that special touch. Hayden was the same - very simple and flawed technique, but great results. You cant ignore runs.

Ok, I'll accept he may not be in great touch right now. But as soon as he makes a couple of scores, I want him in the test team.

How can you dismiss Hughes so easily, bombersno1, citing poor form as the reason when you so readily place Usman in your team? How has he had better recent form than Hughes?

Personally I would be bringing both Marsh and Hughes in to replace North and Katich respectively.

Was watson an opener before he opened for aussies

nobody wants Watson to be opener. He never should have been put in as opener. Fancy trying to justify the selection of Marsh by bringing up another pathetic decision by our selection panel.

So we are picking him on 50 over form? Why do I hate this notion..oh yes..I know why..they picked Doherty on the same basis!

I'd personally rather not be bringing in any openers as let me be frank- they are all in ordinary form. Khawaja is just the best of a poor lot at the moment, and I saw the 50 odd he made yesterday and that grafting style of opener is the one we need to compliment Watson. I like Philip Hughes and I really want him to succeed but he needs to be in form, and he has done bugger all in 4 day cricket this season.

I do...

A greater question is why Marsh for he doesn't even open the batting???

As evidenced here, here, and here, Marsh became a regular opener for WA in the 08-9 season following the retirement of Langer and departure of Rogers to Victoria.

I'm not trying to say that he's the solution (I not convinced he is, but then again I don't think there is a solution to this Ashes series), but to say "he doesn't deserve it because he doesn't play as an opener" is simply making something up to support your own theory...

How did he go as opener last year?? Must have went well since he is now batting at 3 or 4... Marsh has bucket loads of talent but is not an opener nor is he a better player than Hughes.

Watson shouldn't be our long-term opener, but do you think the Selectors would have the balls to change the order?

Or Nielsen, or whoever the shit is responsible for it these days?

Hughes has three centuries and should never had been dropped in the first place.

While his form has been scratchy, he has still got some decent runs.

Hughes will be playing - wouldn't mind betting that he'll come out and hit a ton if he was selected.

Awful technique that is completely suspect to short bowling. Suppose he's lucky they can't bowl more than 2 bouncers in an over.

Exactly.

Hughes is lucky there isn't a specialist opener like Jaques who is creaming them. Most of the form batsmen are in the middle order.

Who is above Marsh for a middle order spot?
Don't even think about saying Ferguson, Khawaja is not batting well either.
Marsh is the most in form batsman in the country ATM apart from Hussey, he should be in for North.
How is two 50's on the trot "not batting well"?

As for Hughes, he's got that genuine 'X-Factor' about him, can win matches off his own bat. Will no doubt fail every now and then but he's got that ability to win matches with his strokeplay and unpredictability and can score big hundreds, and for that reason I wouldn't hesitate to bring him in. He's going to be a long term Australian opener so why not bring him in now, this is probably the toughest assignment he's ever going to face.

Indeed why Hughes.

His form in Sheffield Shield this season has been poor yet is rewarded with a Test spot.

His effort today therefore is depressingly predictable

Because he's always been the long term replacement option for one of Watson/Katich. He's been the stand-by opener if you like.
His form this year has been poor but his form over the past 3 years has been great and he showed 3 weeks ago against England that he can step up when asked. Averaged 50 in all forms. Still 22.
Did nothing today but will be persisted with, and rightly so.

Big Footy jumping the gun, who would have thought.

Hughes should be left in the side to settle for a while, this is like a 2nd debut for him and his first debut was a shocker.

You have to be joking, he is nothing more then a journeyman, approaching 30 played about 20 games averages 37 at a very slow strike rate.

least he's willing to stick it out and hold up an end for a while. unlike the whole australian team who think its a 20/20

I can't say I was impressed by Hughes at all today.

Tries to play an expansive shot to leg from his sixth delivery and gets bowled as a result.

It was a funny way to display that he has matured as a batsman and deserves a place in the side.

Maybe he should try defending the good balls early on until he gets his eye in - a strange notion, I know.

Hopefully this was just nerves or whatever and he can start scoring runs soon.
