Why Hughes?

I'm happy enough to stick with him.

Like Johnson, if he gets it right he can go a long way to helping us win matches.

We aren't exactly full of quality options so I prefer to pick the guys with that sort of upside. I can't believe people are pushing for Robinson.

Katich, Langer even Steve Waugh had to refine their techniques to hold / regain their spots but not the prince from NSW.

and 13 centuries>6 of them

And aged 22 as well.

It's obvious why he's been chosen, he's a very talented player, but choosing a player out of form rarely works well. Should've picked Khawaja really, who has shown both substance over a career and recent form (probably Klinger to be honest). But class is permanent, and Hughes will prove to be a good long term player (IMO anyway)
 
Who said anything about this guy having no confidence? He's just arrogant. The little prat has clearly made no effort to refine his technique and deal with his blindingly obvious flaws, and he falls for the same trick every time. He clearly thinks he's good enough. Like Clarke, he's more worried about his diamond ear stud than trying to become a good cricketer.

But if your too ignortant to refine the simplest of technical flaws talent is irrelevant.

Disagree, from reports of people who know people (tennuous i guess) confidence post-09 Ashes was absolutely shot, But he has still been working bloody hard, although losing a few months with a shoulder injury wouldnt have helped him. You watch him bat and he is clearly stuck between trying to play 'properly ' and trying to play naturally, and it isnt pretty viewing. For both his and the teams sake I hope he can find a way to play his game and fix these issues he has.
 
Jesus, if his confidence was "absolutely shot" because he got dropped as a junior Test player, he needs to get over himself and harden the hell up. Honestly, that is one of the most pathetic things I've heard.

If, this long afterwards, he's still "stuck between" his homespun hokey technique and something worth playing Test cricket with - maybe the real truth is he's not mentally good enough. See Graeme Hick.

Not saying I'm against it, but it's a lukewarm feeling.

Khawaja has to play now, and I want Smith playing as well. He has genuine gamebreaking ability with the bat, and eventually will have with the ball as well. Needs as much gametime at the top level as possible.

Khawaja could probably open as well. His technique is very solid.

I'd almost bring Usman in for Hughes, bat Hussey at 3 and Ponting and Clarke slide down, with Ponting to give it away after the series. Clarke just isn't good enough to bat any higher than 5.
 
Smith doesn't look ready for test cricket at all.
I'm not prepared to play him just for the sake of the future, that's what SS cricket is for.
D Hussey slots in at 6.

I'm sure he'll flay the bangers and the lankas and hte zimmers, and he'll do outstandingly well on flat tracks.

That's what Hughes is fast turning out to be. If he doesn't change his attitude quick smart, he's going to be a trivia question, not a regular Test player.

He's been out of the test side for quite a while now (18 months?) and you've got to wonder if he has done any work on his technique at all. He still looks like a rabbit in the headlights at times.
