Nonsense.
I work for many Muslim women and many only observe the covering traditions out of fear of retribution.
Of course they tell a little white girl it's all culturally cool as they sweat their arses off with ten kids and a dozen shopping bags under their arms as the husband walks ten paces ahead.
It's a grand old culture,it's the high flying culture,it's the culture for me and for you.......
Bullshit!!!!

Footy is the one true religion. All other religions are wicked, tricksy and false :p
Footy is the National religion....Which makes all the atheists on big footy look kinda stoopid.

And anyone attempting a Hitchens reading on Islam, is as lost as it gets.

Catch a plane from Heathrow to Qatar / UAE. You will see women get on in jeans and get off in traditional garb.
That's why I posted the Aayan Hirsi Ali meme.
I've heard her talk about western women fighting for equality for themselves but when it comes to Muslim women's oppression it's their choice and it's all just a cultural choice.
It's nonsense and the feminist movement is seen as much weaker and stupider for this particular position as Aayan has stated numerous times.

There certainly is an element of that, for sure. But many like it.
In uni, I knew a few veiled girls. It always perplexed me they'd spend waaaaay more time on their eyemakeup then get their CK veil and cover up their hair.
I think there are a range of reasons why this is worn . It *can* be by choice.

What?
Change is actioned from within.
Like the Saudi prince making arguments that women should drive in Saudi Arabia.
Or the murder of Qandeel Baloch - the outrage within is far more effective than some woman in NY or Sydney saying "oh no, women are oppressed wearing a headscarf "

Cue 'dirty boots'
My argument still remains that it is the white so called feminists from western liberal democracies, wanting to call out white blokes for sexism, but when it comes to culturally different men or men with brown skin they turn their backs on their sisters and choose not to call sexism out for fear of being non liberal.
They become the oppressors and the bigots they rail against.

What would you like western women to do, exactly?

Good for you. Too many assumptions on here that they don't.
Re. Burkkas. Do they have a choice in countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan? Pretty sure they used to in Afghanistan until religious nutters took control. Iran previously had pretty liberal dress codes for women too albeit they don't make their women wear burkkas. I know prima facie here the women 'have a choice' but I doubt many actually do. Just like many women are caught in relationships here they cannot leave as they are financially dependent on their partner.

SA is a terrible place for women which is why I find it hard to read it is such a good friend of US and Aus.

Can only speak of first hand experience over many years here.

There is so much we all can agree on what is wrong about Islam, but what a woman wears by choice or not is not one of them.

Re your last sentence, this is not exclusive to Muslim women.

No doubt my last sentence is in respect to all sorts of women in this country. That is why I put it there. So women in the countries I mentioned get to dress by choice?

Saudis is not mainstream Islam is it?

It's similar to saying all Christians are terrible due to the jesuit society

Have no idea why so many male? posters are making such a big issue of it by presuming to know more about it then the females in question.
Go figure...

I am not going to presume to know what goes on in other countries and whether women are dressed in that manner by choice or are forced, I will leave it to others.
