As above tweet

“Any player catching the ball directly from the foot may call “Mark”. He then has a free kick; no player from the opposite side being allowed the come inside the spot marked.”

They’d actually yell “mark” and mark the spot on the ground. An opponent could stand on the mark, but not go beyond it.

Still the exact rule in rugby union. Unless you have one foot on the ground when you catch the ball ('making the mark'), you don't get a free kick.

All sports borrow terms from other sports.

possibly the highest brow coldpastie! it is a very pointless discussion! Whyd they call it a Torpedo punt? Cos it spins like a torpedo....wowwwwww thats cool

Why do they call it a speccy? Cos its short for special and some drunk bloke at a bar thought it would be a good way to define a high mark.

Its like everything, football terminology is just words that people have made up and that have stuck who gives a poo. YOU COLD PASTIE!
No, iot,s spectacular.

Likes didn't exist in the early years. It is why a lot of old timey posters that are still around don't have a great like to post ratio.

I like how some other posters in this thread haven't noticed and are arguing with someone from 14 years ago.
