A behind is called a behind because the ball goes behind the goal post. That is the historical reason for the name whether you agree with it or not.

Because the bll goes behind the post on most occasions ie, watching a kick from 40m out straight on, the ball will pass the goal post behind it, not in front. (this only works when the point is kicked on the side that the player is kicking from (i think????))

Basically because the play stopped when the ball went “behind the goal”... ie, over the goal line (but not through the goals). The defending team would kick it back in toward the other goal
