Why is John Steka from the CFMEU demanding umpires boss is sacked?

Just saw the article but pay walled.

This is very strange.

Like really strange.
A classic example of power going to a person's head. He is a disgraceful piece of work that has been put on a pedestal by the Vic government and is costing the Vic taxpayer heavily....unfortunately he continues to meet no opposition to his bullying, further strengthening his ridiculous and costly demands.
No surprise he now thinks he can control umpiring and continues to demonstrate his own self adulation.

So he randomly picked the AFL head of umpiring?

Surely their is some history between the two?

Th3
There is. However the fact that he feels he can call the shots by holding the AFL/general public to ransom over an umpiring appointment gives a pretty damning insight into his misguided sense of authority.
What's the history???
McBurney does not exactly look the type to be consorting with "colourful" union representatives.

No wonder good people everywhere want the boss’s dog gone.

"Mr Setka said the construction union would not co-operate with the AFL to address any delays or cost overruns on league-related projects until Mr McBurney, who as Australian Building and Construction Commissioner initiated legal action that resulted in millions of dollars of penalties against the Construction Forestry and Maritime Employees Union, was sacked as the AFL umpires boss."

And it wasn’t a slip of tongue or rush of blood moment for Setka. He repeated the threat several times across the day. When asked whether the CFMEU would continue hounding McBurney should he leave the AFL and get a job elsewhere Setka said absolutely yes.

Setka just needed to demand McBurney steps down on the basis of umpire performance across the competition this season.

I'm sure he would have received plenty of support then. :)

How the **** is this even close to being legal? Has this guy got some special status in Victoria that makes him immune to laws?
Yes. His position as leader of the CFMEU gives him protection not afforded to normal people like you and I. And when someone attempts to prosecute him (or his organisation) for breaking said laws he uses his power/influence to threaten that person (like the we are seeing with McBurney).

Smells like extortion.
