Society/Culture Why is Melbin [sic] so out of step with the rest of Australia?

This is beyond stupid.

First, The Federalist is white nationalist trash. Second, she wants stipends raised for junior members so staffers aren't paid below minimum wage and people can properly service constituents by effectively running a local electoral office and being present for committee work in DC. Inability to pay staff properly, locks all but the very wealthy out of serving as a congressional staffer. We want more ordinary people in politics after all. Not just the "coastal elite", or children of plutocrats. Second, politics in the US isn't like Australia. Congresspeople have different duties to Australian MP's. For example Ocasio has serious committee appointments, which are important roles for the proper function of government. Think a more serious version of what Australian Senators perform on Budgetary or Oversight subcommittees. They are also expected to interact directly with their constituents. Her district has a huge population, around 700,000 people. Typically they are managed by both well paid and very wealthy congresspeople, who have whole armies of staff and a huge amount of fundraising machinery behind them. So again, why would we want only the wealthiest establishment types to be so heavily advantaged.

This has nothing to do with her "salary". No wonder you people are so stupid, given your proclivity to believe any old "fake news".

Some melt for an entirely factual piece of news

As the election proved Melbourne is well and truely out of step with the rest of Australia on a number of issues. The Victorian media would have had you believe Dan Andrews is doing a terrific job and federal labor were certainties to win.

Leftist local identities such as Charlie Pickering, Jane Caro, Waleed Ali and Michelle Lawrie have since got on their soap box to criticise the majority of the country for electing a government that didn’t believe in socialism.

Crime continues to spiral out of control in Melbourne and the state Labor government have now all but confirmed there is a massive budget black hole which will result in huge debts while the government refuses to budge on the east west link which they have already wasted $1.3bn on and the federal government have been forced to step in and build the road to stop it from being a political football for Andrews ego.

The most perplexing thing about the whole situation is that the majority of people in Victoria genuinely believe in the socialist propaganda they are fed. They believe they are the majority and anyone who doesn’t agree are uneducated, scared rednecks. It is time Australia booted them out of the commonwealth so they can have their socialist paradise in peace
I think you should take a stand against evil Melbin culture by not respecting the 8 hour day that was won in Melbourne, and not having anything to do with footy (another thing created in Melbourne), ever take part in election (secret ballot in invented in Melbourne), get on a plane with a black box recorder, use and electric drill, watch a movie, drive a Ute or eat Vegemite.

So, without all these great Melbournian inventions, you'd be living in a backward, boring, undemocratic hellhole.

Or as I'd call it, Queensland.

(Oh, and Jane Caro is a Sydneysider you moron)

As a boarder at Launceston Boys' Grammar School in Tasmania, David Warren tinkered with the machine after lessons, learning what made it work.

Quite a good read that. Read it this morning.

If it wasnt for Tasmanians it may not even exist.

Melbourne was the only city to pull people in from every corner to protest World War One, and was partially the reason conscription was never formally introduced.

Every young lad in the West tied their shoelaces, fluffed their collar and jumped over the trenches to their death.

So did Victorians, but the point is without their cohesive, collective ideological movements across time we'd be a much different nation today.

I know that nowadays it kind of translates to blocking off Flinders street with your best Dairy Cow onesie, but that could just be a phase.

Lol at victorians inventing footy. Ever heard of marngrook?

Being a union stronghold is nothing to be proud of and contributes to Victoria being the socialist s**thole it is.

Queensland is ahead on every measure

Tell me, what industry do you work in? Chimney sweep? Chamberpot removals?

Do you take weekends?

Also lol - Queensland is poorer, stupider and less healthy than Victoria.

Queensland has a higher GSP per capita than lol Victoria. Far better standard of living. Is far cleaner and healthier (with the exception of the indigenous communities in the states north and west)

It isn’t. Far more elite place than Victoria. Guessing you’ve either never been to Queensland or spent the entirety of your time in Queensland in surfers Paradise
No, I've been to Brisbane, Gold Coast and a few other major cities there. They're all pretty crap.

Most of Australia's developments emerged from Melbourne. Even the first Federal Parliament was established in Melbourne in 1901. Australia gave women the right to vote at elections and was one the first countries to do so (after NZ who was first).

The Union movement in Victoria was of international importance and saw the 8 hour working day implemented as a global condition of employment. Melbourne was also the financial capital of Australia and still is.

I hope you didn't think that Freemantle and the WA state played any important or significant roles in civil and social development in this country?
You're livin' in the past man.

Go there today and look around the place, Melbourne for the most part is a dreary grey crud hole.

Just because he's a troll doesn't actually mean they are wrong though, Victoria is without a doubt the most overrated little piece of this great country.
Disagree and I'm South Australian. He's clearly a troll if he thinks QLD is any good. There is a reason most people don't care if it gets cast off in a Qexit.

It's never been anything other than that.

It is the people of Melbourne that propels innovation, genius, superb sporting achievements, theater, architecture, Science, Engineering, Medicine, social conscience and sheer magnificence all over the planet my friend.

We in Melbourne do not rely on being some sort of fishing port village that contributes little and whinges all the time going to Canberra with cap in hand and squealing like pathetic warthogs.

Melbourne kreates its own destiny my friend - it doesnt sit at the shoreline petrified with fear and waiting for a boat to dock.

Read some credible history books and published peer reviewed literature and you will see that what I have stated is factual.
