As the election proved Melbourne is well and truely out of step with the rest of Australia on a number of issues. The Victorian media would have had you believe Dan Andrews is doing a terrific job and federal labor were certainties to win.

Leftist local identities such as Charlie Pickering, Jane Caro, Waleed Ali and Michelle Lawrie have since got on their soap box to criticise the majority of the country for electing a government that didn’t believe in socialism.

Crime continues to spiral out of control in Melbourne and the state Labor government have now all but confirmed there is a massive budget black hole which will result in huge debts while the government refuses to budge on the east west link which they have already wasted $1.3bn on and the federal government have been forced to step in and build the road to stop it from being a political football for Andrews ego.

The most perplexing thing about the whole situation is that the majority of people in Victoria genuinely believe in the socialist propaganda they are fed. They believe they are the majority and anyone who doesn’t agree are uneducated, scared rednecks. It is time Australia booted them out of the commonwealth so they can have their socialist paradise in peace

Melbourne is the second biggest and soon to be biggest city in the nation. If you’re a young person in the rest of Australia and want a taste of the big city life, you have a choice between Melbourne and Sydney.

Sydney is ridiculously expensive, few can actually afford to live there and lead a fun life. Those who do usually work in industries like finance, therefore probably vote Liberal.

So the natural choice for most is Melbourne. Reasonably cheap, lots of things to do, the home of footy if that’s what you love, great bars, restaurants, breweries, decent public transport (compared to Sydney). It’s the natural centre of young, progressive people.

Everywhere else in Australia is either suburban hinterland or hicksville by comparison to the two major cities.

Melbourne is expensive as * and barely cheaper than Sydney. Footy is a national Comp so you can live in backwaters like the gold cost or Adelaide and still get a footy fix, everywhere has good bars, restaurants and breweries (most Melbourne ones serve hipster s**t that is undrinkable).

There is very few if any redeeming features to Melbourne and wouldn’t be missed if they were a separate country

Problem is, Melbourne has been a progressives enclave for much longer than the rest of Australia. It means that they are 3-4 generations deep now, so they drown out anyone who disagrees with them.
The rest of Australia didn't catch up until the 90s, so the opposition to the progressives is still large (percentage wise)

All decent cities are expensive.

Any man who hasn’t lived in a major city (or overseas) before he is 35 is a failure*.

*Unless he has started a family or is particularly close to his family. If you’re some kind of alienated bugman who looks forward to the next iPhone or TV show, and has never left somewhere like Brisbane or Adelaide, don’t talk to me.

sydney has the weather. no doubt about it

Melbourne's biggest value-add industry is tertiary education and it is a hub for Australian tertiary education as well. There are strong links between education and where someone is likely to sit on the political spectrum.

Crime is actually falling statistically, not that the Murdoch presses want that narrative in the public eye.

Of course there is that correlation when the unis are preaching ridiculous left wing propaganda such as multiple gender pronouns and trigger warnings. Probably needs to be a review of the overall higher education system

I stepped out of one 5 years ago, it was a cesspit of help the refugees every time the sun was out (soon as it got cold they went inside to turn on the heater i guess) I argued with them a couple of times but felt stupider for having dipped my toe in those waters so just ignored them. I actually don't have much problem with activism mind you these people were pretty thin on facts just felt that it was the right thing to do.

Bigger problem was a few lecturers who could not help but inject their politics into their subjects.

Agree with this. Young people have been ignorant and lack depth of understanding since the dawn of time. The lecturers and faculty should however know better. Facts should always count more than feelings in education

Tertiary education for overseas students in Melbourne is rort to gain entry into the country. Complete a degree in catering and you're entitled to permanent residency. Some of the people 'graduating' can barely speak English. Not that it matters when they drive for Deliveroo or the Chinese only equivalent 'mo er Ben song can'

The crime stats in Victoria have been falling for a number of years, except for a certain demographic and type of violent crime.

I'd add to this: After 18-35yos move to Melbourne and Sydney, their vacancy in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, etc is taken by 40yos moving for the opposite reasons. The ordinariness of the second tier cities is baked in.

Why are people perpetuating this lie. Are they that afraid of non-white people?

I know a few people in their late 30s/early 40s who have moved to Castlemaine and Ballarat.

I suspect the push by both Federal and state governments to make regional centres more attractive, plus upgrades to major rail links, means more people will decide to make the change.

Cheaper and easier to have children in second tier cities. Completely understandable to move back closer to support networks or where you can afford to have a better life for your kids. Being a parent and commuting three hours a day or living in a tiny apartment to make ends meet deprives you of the fullest life.

However any young, single man who’s swiping right on his hometown’s meagre tinder offerings, attending the local races once a year with the boys thinking he’s living a life like Entourage or something equally empty is a muppet. Even worse if they’re voting Liberal/National.

Hopefully. People would like a 20 minute drive to work and more nature blah etc. But not if it means career death and the social scene is oldies and creeps at RSLs.

Castlemaine is known as northocte upper now.

"North Northcote" I've heard it termed.

It does have legitimate live music venues and as alluded to above, people will make a tree change if the sacrifice in nightlife is not too great. Fed Government have introduced a visa category for people settling in regional/rural areas and local governments have their own localised projects.

Outside of North Queensland rural areas are interdependant on the state capitals. A few articles in the past week describe how North Queensland is different with their interdependence more related to port facilities and road/rail accessibility, I guess in part due to the sheer distance from Brisbane.

A lot of them don't know people there however. Thinking of expat English who move to Perth. You ask them where they're from and the answer is overwhelmingly not London/Manchester/biggish place you've heard of. The draw was taking the 'boring' life they already had and adding sunshine to it.

Yeah you will hear both terms used. It is very different to what it was some 20 years ago. Don't worry you can still see Dusty's mum making her way around town.
