Why is such a big deal made of the ANZAC game?

Spewing we didn't get an inferiority complex and start an 'Anzac Day-eve' clash because we felt left out that Collingwood/Essendon were getting all the headlines. :drunk:
Let’s face facts, they get to play in the “poor mans” shitty curtain raiser.

Normally left for the reserves.

That guy with the deep voice who does all the Channel 7 promos is particularly nauseating around this game.

You know what, if they just played the last post and had a few veterans going around before the game it would be so much more palatable. Channel 7 Melbourne are the most cringe laden organisation ever. Everything they touch is virtually unwatchable. They were promoting the Stawell Gift as the world's most famous foot race. Are you ******* serious?

Does anyone else think ANZAC eve is the most contrived bullshit the AFL has come up with? ANZAC eve isn't even a thing, it's literally something the AFL has made up out of nowhere to make more money. And people have got their backs up about Birds of Tokyo.
Dead right there! Of course it's to make money - the upside is we get another marquee game of footy to watch. It's probably a good thing that the AFL makes money to keep the comp going and such.

AFL makes money = we can go watch big time footy.:thumbsu:

Not surprised to see Collingwood and Essendon supporters think everyone is upset over them having the game.

It’s got nothing to do with the 2 teams playing, the whole fiasco is exploitive and a joke.
It wasn't a Collingwood or Essendon supporter who made this thread.

Who is upset?

Didn't you make the thread?

No one epitomises the ANZAC spirit more than James "Hurricane" Hird
I can just imagine him in a past life: Brigadier James Hird, one of the idiotic officers who mismanaged the Gallipolli landing and sent all the young men under his care headlong into certain death. "Tally ho, chaps! Whatever it takes!"

I like your use of the word fiasco. I'm not so sure about your arguments, but fiasco is a fine and powerful word and should be called upon more often.

It’s a great fixture and I look forward to it. It’s only behind the Dreamtime Game for the biggest H&A game for the season.
Why would you play a team with a yella stripe on Anzac Day? That’s a fiasco!

Wait, it’s not Anzac Day so the team that bears the mark of the coward can take the field?

Because then you'd have weekends with zero games over there?
No it would mean teams from Victoria travel more you know like how we travel 11 to 12 times and you guys leave the state 5 or 6 times. More games in WA and SA and less in Vic, you know like the Cricket, NBL, Soccer and other professional sports can dish out games evenly unlike the AFL who seem to embarrassingly favour Victorian Teams with GF at the G favourable draws and the premier games like ANZAC day...you know I'm telling the truth here.

You are our supporting act Finger.
Richmond just trying to get in on the act with a cheap version of the real thing.

Haha two responses? Relax, Finger. I’ll get to you when I have a moment.

ANZAC Day is a great game and I enjoy it being between Essendon and Collingwood - two big four rivals. I wouldn’t want Richmond playing on ANZAC Day as it just wouldn’t feel right. It’s a fixture that belongs to the Pies and Bombers.

I’m happy with our ANZAC Day Eve clash with the Dees. I can get pissed and not have to worry about work the next day. I think our pre-game ceremony is better as well. I’ve been to both live and there’s more atmosphere at night time...

Some of those images just look spectacular. One thing I would like to see changed is perhaps the day fixture on ANZAC Day between Essendon and Collingwood to start at night. The eternal flame and the crowd just look so much better in the dark.

Just pulling ya chain as well there Finger. ANZAC Day Eve is the biggest H&A fixture of the season and I thoroughly enjoy it as a neutral.

I don’t get the fuss really, it is treated as the second biggest game of the year behind the GF, yet it is only a regular season home and away game.

There is an enormous load of promotional w@nk in the lead up to it as if the players are going into battle... They aren’t, it’s a football game worth 4 competition points.

The ANZAC medal is treated to be as prestigious as winning a Norm Smith, which is also ridiculous - it’s the best player in a game between Essendon and Collingwood.

The better option would be to only have ANZAC round.

I’m all for marquee games - Geelong gets Easter Monday for example. However, the ANZAC game should just be another marquee game, not its own Grand Final.
So your complaint is that people enjoy the build up to a specific game?
Who cares?
I'm sure there are plenty that don't care about Geelong and Hawthorn and their games too, we hear how amazing that is constantly.

It's really just more of a great celebration for ANZAC day and what it represents. It just happens to be the same two teams all the time. I've even been to it and it was great and I don't support either teams.

Due to the AFL having a finals series most of the games during the season have little meaning, even the games between the top teams so they have to create some excitement from something at least.
There is no celebration on ANZAC day if you actually understand what it represents.

The public isn't that ****in dumb that they need a grossly commercialised game of footy for anything, kids learn about this stuff from a young age. In WA at least. So is this level of stupidity and ignorance just a Victorian thing, what the hell are you doing in your schools over there?
Just a Collingwood thing mate.

It is very important to the AFL that certain Vic clubs are promoted and seen as the Big players of the AFL.
My question is if they are so big and powerful why would they need these marquee slots? Wouldn’t the AFL be better off building the brands of other clubs? These clubs brands are fine.

Ahhh. Logical. But then again they’ve never had a prob with Thursday night footy anyway, so go figure :smirk:
I guess when they experimented with the ANZAC Day double header, it wasn't popular; OR (more likely) Essendon & Collingwood complained about the spotlight not being fully on their game?
