Vic Why is the Andrews government refusing to co-operate with the police?

An Ombudsman’s report released in March found that Labor had misused $388,000 in taxpayer funds by paying electorate officers to carry out part-time political campaigning in breach of parliamentary rules.

Labor MPs have refused to be interviewed about the matter, and Victoria Police have been issued with hands off warnings. This smacks of political interference in the operation by police in the judicial process.

The police handling of the "red shirts" probe has caused ructions among some people involved in the investigation, who have become increasingly concerned about interference from senior figures in force command.

Some officers are troubled about a directive given to detectives, which they consider inappropriate and overly deferential to MPs accused of misusing public funds for political benefit.

The Age can reveal that some officers from the fraud and extortion squad were told that if MPs did present for interviews, they were not to be searched, photographed or have their fingerprints taken.

It's worse than that the Govt is not allowing the police to interview. It is corrupt behaviour.

Because the election is in four weeks.

That's probably the main reason above all others.

Probably true. But people refusing to cooperate with the police and even interfering with the judicial process have no credibility to be retained as our lawmakers.

Problem is the police have timed this to the election rather than timed it to the ombudsman report. That would make them really corrupt and paid off by some lib!

And he's completely anticipated this little conservative putsch as well. Good on him for telling them to * off and taking all the necessary precautions to protect himself from mercenaries paid off by libs!

The Ombudsman’s report was released in March and found that Labor had misused $388,000 in taxpayer funds by paying electorate officers to carry out part-time political campaigning in breach of parliamentary rules. Labor MPs have had plenty of time to give satisfactory explanations to the police. Instead they refuse to cooperate and appear to be interfering at a government level in the police investigation.

Yeah but the police have had 7 months to ask him for an explanation. Why wait until now?

Haha good on him. Maybe they should raid his offices again
As long as he's given ample notice

Gee it's funny how people forget how manipulated the qld police force was under the nats
Same thing with Campbell Newman under the nats
Same with napthine and Ryan. In Victoria when the nats sold the state after stealing power ( ted)
( sure helps when the police commissioners a old school budie)
Total exploitTion of police powers see Craig Thompson , ( what a joke $600 bucks) 5 detectives filmed by a tipped off media

All government organisations need a big broom

The police investigation of Labor’s ''red shirts'' affair has been systematically undermined from within, a source familiar with the probe says.

The Office of Public Prosecutions is assessing the strength of cases against more than a dozen Labor MPs, including six ministers but is increasingly unlikely to make a recommendation on whether criminal charges should be laid before this weekend's election.

The handling of the politically sensitive probe named Operation Ocotillo has infuriated some senior police, who expect the matter will be referred to Victoria's corruption watchdog.

A source familiar with the investigation said the taskforce had been "set up to fail", after repeated interference from high-ranking officers.

Some of the directives appear to be inconsistent with standard police procedure and have significantly weakened the cases against the MPs.

The red shirts affair has dogged the Andrews government throughout the election campaign with the pressure intensifying last month after The Age revealed that Labor MPs had refused to co-operate with the investigation.

There is literally nothing to this "scandal".

I posted that this was going to happen a few days ago.

A certain loudmouth former senior detective, a Vicpol member running as a candidate in Frankston and a few liberal backers in the ranks are trying to stir up trouble.

This leak or rumor was timed for before last nights debate, so it's funny that a couple of journos, happy to report the basically empty allegations, sat on their hands till today.

A certain someone was embarrassed last night, which hasn't helped.

Also, the Libs have their own redshirt scandal brewing which will break mostly after the election.

So corruption within the ALP has been proved? Do you have a source?
The "insider" is literally an LNP booster. It's pretty funny.

Read the article, it's just an empty allegation and one of no real gravity that a small cadre have been bragging about "leaking" to the press for some weeks. Publicly.

The age are being so cagey because they know it's a stunt and who the copper(s) and one former have ties to.

Well the state ombudsman has found the alp missapropriated 400k of tax payers money. It's now a matter of who is going to be held account. In typical alp fashion this wont happen because sheep will believe anything they are told.

So

1. Taxpayers money stolen by alp
2. Govt takes no action on stolen money
3. Stolen money used to pay alp lackies illegally
4. Govt takes no action to recover corruptly distributed money
5. ALP Govt does not co operate with police and probably tries to stop investigation

You are so wrong its not even worth a proper response, but here's a hint: Corruption, where has it been proved?

No scandal? Who should we believe?

The Victorian Ombudsman who found that Labor had misused $388,000 in taxpayer funds by paying electorate officers to carry out part-time political campaigning in breach of parliamentary rules.

Two journalists of a left leaning newspaper who report that senior police expect the matter will be referred to Victoria's corruption watchdog.

Or an ALP shill on a football website?

Or Denial Andrews who stated publicly on July 28 that the ALP would co-operate with police on this matter. He lied.

How is a political party that refuses to cooperate with the police entitled to decide our laws?
