REPORT FROM THE 2010 GRAND FINAL.
It was brave, it was heroic, it was full of Magpie spirit, it was battling against the odds. But the Pies went down to their traditional and most hated rivals in the 2010 Grand Final by 4 points. The tenacous Pies battled hard, denied the silky skilled Blues midfield time and space, and led the game for three quarters. In the end the class won out, the Blues pouring on 4 unanswered goals in the last quarter to win the game. Best for the Blues was their midfield duo of Marc Murphy and Norm Smith and Brownlow medal winner Shannon Hurn, picked up at nos 1 and 3 in the rich harvest of the 2005 draft. Collingwood's best was livewire Travis Varcoe, the exiting pacey midfielder picked up at no 5 in the 2005 draft, was a thorn in the side of the Blues all day with his magical skills, so rare in the dour Collingwood side, lit the MCG like a beacon. Magpie coach Mick Malthouse was philosophical about the loss "The AFL is Machiavellian but the Magpie is pure" said Malthouse referring the the fateful 2005 clash between the two teams which determined the destination of the exquisitely talented Hurn. "Yes I know if we lost that game both Hurn AND Varcoe could have been running around in the black & white today, but we kicked the Blues arse that day and no-one can ever take that win away from us as it cemented our 14th spot on the ladder"
